In this week’s issue, we indulged our love of craft with a deep dive into the expressive papier-mâché world of Meritxell Claverol, an artist transforming humble materials into gloriously oversized vessels.

Beautiful craft, moving life stories and a trip to the fields of Catalunya. Here is an excerpt.

New works for Merchant Modern, Los Angeles.
In this series, I have experimented with pigment, introduced into the pulp prior to forming, I used colour as an intrinsic property of the material rather than a layer to make the volumes emerge directly from the matter.

It’s a more organic approach, where volumes are shaped by the behaviour of the pulp itself.

My work for Kave Gallery, Girona.

A dialogue between the ephemeral and the enduring. A place where surface and form take the center of stage.

Where geometric shapes and repetition become structure and volume is light.

*Buy It Anyway*, a series I created for the latest edition of Kave Gallery with @kavehome.

I’m Meritxell Claverol, a visual artist from Pallars Jussà, Catalonia, living between Los Angeles and the Pyrenees.

I try to bring my own modern twist to a medium rich with deep historical context.
My forms stage a dialogue between space, geometry and stripe: totemic silhouettes interrupted by radial bursts, voids cut through the volume so that the surrounding space becomes part of the work.

The value of an object resides not in its nobility, but in the time, the hands, and the intention that transformed it.
