“From the broken remains of the past I want to make new”

Bethlem Gallery presents ‘Touching the Surface’, a solo show of nearly one hundred ceramic sculptures by artist Keith Clapson.

Curated by Rina Sago and Amanda Glynn at Bethlem Gallery, ‘Touching the Surface brings together works made by Clapson since 2017. The artist’s approach is Maximalist, ‘more is never enough’, to create pieces that play with our sense of the tactile and glow with intense colours and lustre. Textures draw or repel a desire to touch, while pigments created through the interplay of materials and heat provide visual and narrative journeys within each work. taken in Bethlem Gallery by @clcd23

Kirsty Andrew @kirstyandrewartist

Kirsty Andrew is a London based artist with a Fine Art (Sculpture) Degree from Central Saint Martins. She was brought up in the Lake District and has been living in London since 1993.

Her work is influenced by memory, family, relationships, what is known and unknown, seen, and unseen and the contrast between natural and urban environments.

Kirsty researches her subject in depth. She thinks through the creative process by methodical, repetitive testing and making. Old ideas often coming back to the forefront years later.

Her practice is diverse. She has shown large and smaller scale sculptural works (incl. resin, fabric, plaster, glass); prints (etching / lithography); drawings and handmade books.

Kirsty had access to a sculptural ceramic studio during her time at ENSBA in Paris. Following her Fine Art Degree, she decided to study this medium in more depth. She is drawn to the versatility of clay.

Her approach is investigatory, exploring the effects of soluble salts and oxides on the internal and external surfaces of her work and creating new organic structures by combining clay with a range of materials including cotton wool and paper.

Caroline Burstein Hammond @caroline_burstein_hammond

Having recently completed a rigorous diploma course at City Lit in London - a two year course that has taken almost 3.5 years alongside 15 other dedicated and supportive student colleagues that I can call friends, I feel proud and excited to be able to call myself a Ceramic Artist.

Despite a previous career in cosmetics and fashion I have always been influenced by our natural world alongside a fascination with textiles, especially the ancient and indigenous where you can trace the similarities between the marks and symbols from one culture to another.

My work is multi-faceted with some pieces demanding precision and control and with others I seek to encourage and push that unknown alchemy that arises when the clay and glaze combust inside the ferocity of the kiln. by @clcd23

‘Creases and Folds’

A series of numbered handmade sculptures in various clays and glazes fired to Earthenware and Stoneware.

Sculptural ceramic pieces formed around air, the folds and creases representing constraint from life. Colours bubble and ooze from openings and slits, ‘overflowing emotions’ squeezed out through pressure. Like the early creation of the earth’s crust, this is the start of something new, colourful, and wonderful.

This body of work developed from my personal experiences of constraint and the effects of suffering from extreme OCD that I endured for almost twenty years. Observe the physical creasing and emotional folding of the hollow sculptural forms. My once dark and hollow inside now free from the anxiety disorder, rivers of colour creating a new life and a future to look forward to.
