Last chance to see #TouchingTheSurface! Closes 5pm Saturday!

Make sure you come to the gallery today or tomorrow between 9:30am and 5pm to catch the fantastic Touching the Surface show, which comes to an end on Saturday.

It has been a real joy having artist Keith Clapson's first solo show here, not least for his frequent presence himself - including running last Saturday's wonderful painting workshop with fellow artist Terence Wilde @wildeterence. .

Get in while you still can! And our new show, the Bethlem Art Fair, opens on Saturday 25th November.

Sharing another piece from 'Touching the Surface', our current solo show by Keith Clapson. 'Raving and Melancholy' are Keith's responses to the stone figures in the gallery foyer, which were originally displayed above the gates of Bethlem Royal Hospital during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. You'll be able to hear Keith talk about his inspiration on our new digital guide, coming soon!

The gallery and museum are open today and tomorrow, 9:30-5pm and entrance to both is free.

We had some interesting shapes at our workshop last Saturday inspired by the ceramic sculptures of Keith Clapson, whose exhibition 'Touching the Surface' is on at the gallery now. Keith frequently works by wrapping clay around balloons and other objects, so the workshop participants tried the same thing using plaster casting and they've made some wonderful creations!

If you'd like to see Keith's originals, the gallery is open today 9:30-5pm and is free to visit.

“From the broken remains of the past I want to make new”

Bethlem Gallery is delighted to present ‘Touching the Surface’, a solo show of nearly one hundred ceramic sculptures by artist Keith Clapson @nospalchtiek_art .

Curated by Rina Sagoo and Amanda Glynn at Bethlem Gallery, ’Touching the Surface’ brings together works made by Clapson since 2017. The artist’s approach is Maximalist, ‘more is never enough’, to create pieces that play with our sense of the tactile and glow with intense colours and lustre. Textures draw or repel a desire to touch, while pigments created through the interplay of materials and heat provide visual and narrative journeys within each work.

A programme of events including workshops and a symposium accompany this exhibition. Link in bio.

Showing at Bethlem Gallery, 20 September – 18 November 2023
Open 9.30am – 5pm, Wednesday-Saturday

Six months ago I had my City Lit Ceramics Diploma Graduation Exhibition with my wonderful cohort @clcd23 .
.
Tomorrow is the first day of my Ceramics & Glass MA at the Royal College of Art.
.
I first went to an open day at the RCA back in 2015. I had just graduated from Central Saint Martins Fine Art (Sculpture) BA.
.
My plan had been to apply for their MA in Sculpture but it just didn’t work timing wise.
.
Having seen how clay could be used sculpturally while studying at ENSBA in Paris (ERASMUS exchange) I decided to investigate the material further, eventually leading me to the Diploma.
.
So it’s really exciting to be finally starting there tomorrow. I can’t wait to get stuck in, make the most of the amazing facilities and everything else that comes with the RCA.
