When my daughter asked me that, it made me stop in my tracks. It was an honest question.

“Mom, do you think you’re gonna do it? Lose the weight?”

She wasn’t being snarky, she just genuinely wanted to know if I would go ahead and do the thing I’d worked at for 6 years. The years I had dieted my way *up* to 30lbs heavier.

Swipe to see a list of all the things I’ve tried. I’ve probably forgotten some others too. Have you tried any of these? Some absolutely have good components and I’m sure work for some people! I truly gave them my best shot, although with a few I gave up around 8 weeks when I saw no changes but felt exhausted all the time.

What really worried me was going on something like a lemonade cleanse for 10 days, or Whole30 for 30 days, and not losing ANY weight, like I had in my 30s. I now know that insulin resistance was blocking fat loss/burn and truly leaving me starving for energy even while having months of fuel on my hips.

I’m putting an asterisk on a few things on my list which are good additions: like liver flushes and parasite cleanses and probiotics (because these can absolutely help overall health and the ability to burn fat) AND CrossFit (which I love and if done with restraint so as to not spike stress hormones, will absolutely build muscle which is a metabolic upgrade).

BUT even those can be done without fat burn (ask me how I know…I did them during 2020-2024 while continuing to gain fat).

What is essential when fat-loss resistant is changing our insulin response through diet and consistent movement through the day. And water and sleep….but it’s mostly diet, folks!

I start another strict 14 day reset on Monday! I have 5 friends joining me…some are on their second reset. Do you want to join me too in resetting your insulin response? If your insulin is not primed, you’re probably building a “tried that” list like I was.

My result so far: 17.2lbs fat lost! (At least!…I’ve also built muscle in this time.)

Yes, dear daughter, I AM DOING THIS! ❤️

If you want to do the next round with me, comment RESET for details. by @cleangreenstart

There comes a point in the journey where you have to ask yourself:

Do I miss her — the lighter, freer, more energized version of me — enough to give up the little comforts that keep me stuck?

For me, it meant saying no to the mindless snacking, the late-night treats, the foods that soothed me in the moment but stole from my long-term goal. It wasn’t about punishment. It was about choosing the version of me I wanted most.

And here’s what I learned: you don’t have to give those foods up forever. But you do have to give them up for a while — long enough to heal patterns, reset cravings, and prove to yourself that you’re capable of more.

It helps that the superfoods I am choosing instead are delicious in their own right. And the more I leaned into these good choices, the more I realized: the slim, strong, confident me was worth it.

✨ If you’re standing in that in-between space right now, I see you. Don’t be afraid to miss the old comforts. Just let your longing for the best version of you be stronger. #metabolic #reset by @cleangreenstart

In two days, Heiko and I will celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. That’s long enough to know that we are very very blessed (some would call it luck) to have such a successful marriage. Truly, we just can’t claim full credit for all this goodness; 99% of our success should be attributed to what we have received from others, from being well-matched, and from rarely being separated by circumstances.

But I’m pretty sure the other 1% is due to good cooking.

Exhibit A: Let me show you the sandwich which I made for Heiko today.

First, please recognize that the sourdough bread was made in my own kitchen, from organic, unbleached, unfortified flour, filter drinking water, and Celtic sea salt. 12 hours of cold proofing. Perfect moist interior and crunchy crust. I made it with love.

Then I built the sandwich as two sides of a whole: the one side (in this order): grass fed butter, organic strawberry jam, havarti cheese, two perfectly fried grass fed eggs with salt and pepper, a slice of bacon. The other side, organic mayo, imported German mustard, dry salami, oven roasted turkey, home grown tomatoes with Celtic sea salt and fresh cracked pepper, sprouts (sulpheraphane! Iykyk). Then the two sides were carefully joined, and the sandwich sliced for eating.

Please note that the order of ingredient flavors matters. Also, this sandwich can only be achieved in late summer for want of home grown tomatoes. And also: men observe the amount of meat stack on a sandwich as directly related to a woman’s love for them.

Which brings me back to marriage advice: I’ve been married long enough to know that a sandwich can’t fix a bad marriage. But if your marriage is middling…have you tried making an amazing sandwich for your husband? 🤣🤣 Just because you love him?? 😍

🎉 We just published the 30th episode of The Overflow Podcast! I honestly can’t believe we’ve already reached this milestone.

If you’ve spent any time online lately, you’ve probably noticed that everyone has “research” to back up what they’re saying.

📚 One influencer cites a study.
📚 Another says the exact opposite.
📚 Someone tells you “the science is settled.”
📚 Someone else says the research is being cherry-picked.

So…whom do you believe?

As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, one of the biggest skills I’ve had to develop is learning how to read research critically and put the pieces together. Real health is rarely explained by one isolated study. It’s about understanding the bigger picture and asking better questions.

In this episode, the three of us pull back the curtain on how we evaluate health research—without simply taking someone’s word for it.

We talk about:
✨ How to read a research paper
✨ Questions to ask before accepting a study’s conclusions
✨ Correlation vs. causation
✨ Research bias and funding
✨ Why headlines often oversimplify the science
✨ How to become a more confident, critical thinker when it comes to your health

You don’t need a medical degree to learn how to evaluate research. In fact, I’ve met many physicians who have shared that some of their greatest growth came after medical school, when they began digging into the research themselves and learning to think beyond what they were originally taught.

Whether you’re trying to make decisions for yourself, your family, or simply want to stop feeling overwhelmed by conflicting health advice, I think you’ll really enjoy this conversation.

Confession: I’m not much of a podcast listener. 😬 That feels like a truly disloyal thing to admit, seeing as I’m publishing a podcast myself, but there it is. Mainly I listen when I walk, weed the garden, or drive longer distances… but honestly, quiet during those times feels like a balm. Or maybe it’s because I spend my research time reading studies and books instead.

But I do love real conversations with real people. My life is so full of great people—wise, interesting, inspiring—that I get plenty of “personal podcasts” through private conversations. Of course, Becky and Andrea, my fellow Overflow hosts, are top of that list and faithful weekly conversationalists with me.

We’ve completed 27 episodes of our podcast, Overflow! This week our episode on intentional living dropped — but look at all these fun topics we’ve covered! 😆

20 episodes in… and in just 48 hours this one is already our most downloaded episode yet 👀

Which tells me something important:

This conversation is deeply needed.

Because whether infertility has touched your own story or someone you love, most of us know a woman or couple carrying this struggle quietly.

And the numbers are hard to ignore.

Fertility rates have dropped dramatically across the world over the last several decades.

In the 1960s, women globally averaged around 5 children. Today, that number sits just above 2, and in the U.S. we’re now below replacement levels.

But this episode is about far more than statistics.

Behind those numbers are real people.

Women and couples who are:
✨ trying everything
✨ spending thousands
✨ tracking, researching, hoping
✨ and often feeling exhausted, confused, and discouraged along the way.

So in Episode 20, we asked a bigger question:

What if fertility is about more than reproduction?

What if the body is communicating something deeper?

What happens when stress, blood sugar imbalance, hormone disruption, nervous system overload, mineral depletion, toxin exposure, gut dysfunction, artificial light, and emotional burden all collide at once?

In this conversation we explore:

• Why PCOS and insulin resistance continue to rise
• The relationship between cortisol and progesterone
• Why male fertility deserves far more attention
• The role of minerals like zinc and copper
• How stress physiology influences fertility
• The gut, liver, and estrogen connection
• Why many women are undernourished despite eating “healthy”
• And the environmental pressures modern bodies are navigating every day

This conversation goes much deeper than fertility alone.

It’s really about understanding the body with more compassion and curiosity… and asking what women and families need in order to truly thrive 🌱

And judging by the response already, this message is resonating.

I did over 80 iron IVs.

And somehow… I ended up more anemic than when I started.

That’s the part most people don’t expect.

This episode is my personal story of sitting in the “fix it” cycle for iron deficiency anemia—years of IV treatments, labs that looked like they should be improving… and a body that was quietly telling a different story.

Because while numbers were being “corrected,” something else was happening:
my long-term markers weren’t stabilizing, and I started noticing signs of accelerated aging I couldn’t ignore.

What I understand now is what I wish I had understood then:

iron doesn’t operate alone. It depends on a network of cofactors. And when those are missing, more iron doesn’t automatically mean more health.

This conversation is part story, part reckoning, and part what I wish every woman dealing with fatigue, hair loss, thyroid dysfunction, anxiety, or “mystery anemia” could hear.

Because so many women are being treated for iron deficiency without ever being supported for iron metabolism. Link to this episode is in the comments. by @cleangreenstart

If you’ve been doing all the ‘right things’ for fat loss and still not seeing results, you’re not alone—and there may be a better approach. Many women in midlife feel stuck, repeating the same habits without results—and it’s costing them time and energy.

This Monday I’ll be a featured speaker in the YL Summit, and I’ll be breaking down how metabolism actually works in midlife AS A WOMAN, and why your body responds differently than it used to. Come join me live and learn how to work with it, not against it.

The link to register for this virtual Summit is below. PLEASE NOTE: the times given in the graphic are for Eastern Timezone…please plan accordingly. That is 1pm Pacific.

Also, this Summit runs all week with many fabulous speakers and topics I’m looking forward to. I hope you can benefit from many of them as well. by @cleangreenstart

So many women in midlife feel like they’re living in the middle of everything.

Mid diet.
Mid style.
Middle of raising kids while helping aging parents.
Middle of work responsibilities and home life.

Sometimes it just feels… mid and meh.

But often what’s underneath that feeling is metabolic stress.

When the body runs on too little sleep, too much stress, and inconsistent nourishment, it shifts into protection mode:

Slower metabolism
More fat storage
Less muscle building
Less energy

Not because your body is broken.

Because your body is trying to keep you safe.

When we begin sending different signals—
nourishment, sleep, hydration, minerals, strength training, nervous system calm—your metabolism can begin shifting again.

Stress → safety
Depletion → nourishment
Muscle loss → muscle building
Carb dependency → metabolic flexibility

And underneath all of that is a truth women sometimes forget:

✨ You are worth the effort it takes to feel well.

Your health is not selfish.
It’s stewardship.

And if rebuilding metabolic health feels like a long road right now…

I’m here to teach, guide, and cheer you on.

Sometimes birth control is offered as the first answer…
for acne
for painful or heavy periods
for irregular cycles
for emotional swings

Often in the teen years. Often quickly.
And many are saying yes without ever being taught how our hormones work or what those symptoms might be asking for beneath the surface.

🎙️ In this episode of Overflow: A Women’s Roundtable, we share the conversation we share a conversation about chemical birth control that we wish all women had before being offered the pill as the “only solution”.

Because after starting, many women experience:
• new or rising anxiety
• mood changes
• feeling unlike themselves
• shifts in stress tolerance

Hormonal birth control can influence metabolism, weight patterns, blood sugar handling, and the way the body uses key minerals.

It may contribute to nutrient depletion, copper imbalance, and changes that can take time to unwind when a woman hopes to conceive later.

These are not small things. 🌿
They are whole-body conversations.

Yet many women never hear about them until years down the road, when they are trying to understand fatigue, cycle problems, or fertility struggles.

Our hope for this episode 🤍
✨ to educate
✨ to bring language to lived experiences
✨ and to help women make informed, peaceful decisions now that protect their future health

If you are:
• connecting dots in your own story
• a mama guiding a daughter
• a teen being offered the pill
• or someone who wants to safeguard fertility for the years ahead

we recorded this with you in mind. ❤️

Winter can feel heavy.

I used to think it was only emotional.
Turns out it’s physical too.

When natural light hits our eyes and skin, it sets timing for the entire hormonal symphony. Ovulation, cortisol rhythm, sleep chemistry, metabolic signals… all of it takes cues from photons.

Our mitochondria are tiny solar accountants. They track light and adjust energy production accordingly ☀️📒

People love to say, “Vitamin D!”
Yes, it matters. It’s a hormone.

But swallowing a capsule or eating sun-bathed mushrooms doesn’t replace the LIGHT SIGNAL that tells the body what time and season it is. 99% chance you don’t need the pill, you need the light signal.

No signal → confused rhythm → tired, moody, snacky, wired at night.

Here’s the hopeful part:

Winter isn’t only about missing light.
It’s also an invitation to:

❄️ welcome cooler temps (sends out melanin deep to create rested energy for us)
🌙 dim evenings
📵 protect ourselves from bright night exposure
🛌 lean into deeper rest

These anchor the clock just as powerfully.

And the happiest update…

We are less than four weeks away from sunsets after 7pm 🙌☀️

Longer light.
Later glow.
More time for my cells to hum.

My body LOVES light season.

How about you? 🌷 by @cleangreenstart
