a buddhist priest, an illegal printing press, anarchism, and a plot to overthrow the emperor

Uchiyama Gudo was the only Buddhist priest executed in the High Treason Incident of 1910. He hid an illegal printing press beneath the altar of his humble temple, which became the headquarters for his socially engaged Buddhist practice & anarchist publications.

In a time when religious authority was aligned with imperialism, Gudo was one of the only Buddhist priests to denounce the emperor. He called for soldiers to give up their arms, for land to be given back to the peasants, and for his fellow priests to give up their hypocrisy.

“Once again they want to stain my land with working-class blood”
Victor Jara

CHILE 1973
September 11th: the US sponsors a military coup against the democratically elected socialist government of Chile. The presidential palace in flames. The revolution nourished by the folk anthems of ‘Nueva Cancion’ was crushed by foreign intervention. Henry Kissinger wrote, “Make their economy scream.” Blood flowed through the streets of Santiago. Football stadiums became prison camps.

I grew up listening to my grandmother tell stories about life under fascism. The disappearances & the tortures. Censorship and propaganda. This is the story of Chile, 1973. Oppression, resistance, and the memory those we have lost along the way.

This zine was made with in memory of all those departed and disappeared.

Full version will be available at upcoming events, Milwaukee Zinefest, Monkey Wrench Radical Zinefest (Indy), Detroit Zinefest

PDF will be uploaded to cleartruth.studio for free

☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️

Clouds know nothing of our lives. They are vast & quiet things.

In a moment gliding, colliding, swirling, & separating - living their own daily drama above our heads.

Human life is no less active, but it can be a moment of relief from our particular involvements to look up and be returned to a broader perspective, from where the agitations of the here and now seem less significant.

It will all pass, even the current nastiness and anxiety, like the clouds that seemed so fixed and heavy but an hour ago – and yet have now moved on, leaving behind only two or three of their numbers, apologetic and timid before the victorious sun, like the cowed remnants of a scattered army.

Take this time to give up your anxieties to the clouds.

At this year’s @milwaukeezinefest, tables overflowed with hand-cut collages, hand-drawn comics, manifestos, self-published histories, poetry, and guides to local resources. Each table revealed an almost infinite range present at the festival—materials, ideas, and stories. What you’re holding when you hold a zine is never just paper. Zines have always held the everyday and the urgent and the people making them have always understood that those things aren’t so different.

@nadyyakelly sat down with two Midwestern zinemakers, @ladasiathecre8tive and @clear.truth, who tabled at this years MZF to talk about how zines have shaped their practices as artists and activists, and why zines matter now more than ever. Read more at the link in bio.

They've always been part of queer culture, Black culture. Every culture has its own version of where zines started, and we're all willing to trade them because they didn't cost us that much to make.” -Ladasia Bryant. taken in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by @clear.truth

‘Sumatra, 1942’
11x17” risograph print
by Johnny Willems
@clear.truth

Currently on view at KIND Gallery in the Indianapolis International Airport

If you’re traveling through the Indianapolis International Airport you can view this piece as a part of the ‘De Aquí y De Allá: Raíces a Través de Fronters’ group exhibition, featuring artists from the Latino Artist Mentorship Program @lampindiana

The exhibition will be on display from July 10th, 2026 until January 10th, 2027

“Sumatra, 1942 is a portrait of my grandfather’s life and journey as an immigrant. He was born on the island of Sumatra, under Dutch colonial rule, then referred to as the ‘Dutch East Indies’. The newspaper clipping comes from an article written about my grandfather’s experience as a survivor of an interment camp during Japanese occupation of WW2. The top clipping references political tensions that arose in Indonesia during the Cold War, prompting my grandfather to immigrate to America and settle down in Indiana. His passport portrait represents a life lived across borders, colonization, immigration, and language.”
