At this year’s @milwaukeezinefest, tables overflowed with hand-cut collages, hand-drawn comics, manifestos, self-published histories, poetry, and guides to local resources. Each table revealed an almost infinite range present at the festival—materials, ideas, and stories. What you’re holding when you hold a zine is never just paper. Zines have always held the everyday and the urgent and the people making them have always understood that those things aren’t so different.

@nadyyakelly sat down with two Midwestern zinemakers, @ladasiathecre8tive and @clear.truth, who tabled at this years MZF to talk about how zines have shaped their practices as artists and activists, and why zines matter now more than ever. Read more at the link in bio.

They've always been part of queer culture, Black culture. Every culture has its own version of where zines started, and we're all willing to trade them because they didn't cost us that much to make.” -Ladasia Bryant.

the government and supremacists treat “woke” like a bad word because they desperately want you to sleep. To let tablets raise your kids while they bomb someone else’s children to oblivion. To scroll your state controlled media while a child dies in the mines for your screen and your jewelry. While they steal your future and build bunkers.

People in Gaza, in Sudan, in Haiti, in Congo and around the world experience a 9/11 every hour, every day.

we scroll our phones, buy their shit, and let our melted brains leak from our ears, not all at once but minute by minute.

You think you are powerless to change things for the same reason you think you are bored without your cellphone.
This is programming.

Talk to your neighbors. Read books. Think. Use your brain and use your heart.

Reject dehumanizing rituals, it’s all a spiritual battle and the prize has always been your soul.

I worked on ao dai shirts up until I had to leave for my flight so I only have 10 but they are uniquely made with love and I'll definitely have more new merch for friends back home in Indiana!

Thank you @clear.truth, @_sncz_, and all the friends that helped, I would have been much more stressed without all hands on deck!

My #zine order from Clear Truth Press came today. The one in the middle was what originally caught my eye and I added two other compelling zines to the order. @clear.truth

“Sopa de Letras,” curated by Indiana Latino Arts, brings together five artists from the 2025 Latino Artist Mentorship Program to explore queer Latino identity in Indiana. Andie Arana Gomez, Johnny Willems, Sheila Nayeli Clemente-Zoto, Elena Guadiana Segovia, and Avery Miller examine culture, religion, ancestry, the body, and belonging through various mediums. The title reclaims the phrase “letter soup,” rejecting the idea that queer Latino identity is a monolith while emphasizing the representation the artists found in one another’s work.

Each artist uses personal history, culture, and identity to examine a different part of the queer Latino experience. Andie ( @andie.arana.art ) uses “Dawn and Dusk” to center queer joy and bodies often treated as outliers. Johnny ( @clear.truth / @j.j.johnny ) draws from wrestling in his risograph series “Intricate Rituals,” while Sheila ( @_sncz_ ) uses vaquero imagery and a drawn fence in “What Remains Behind the Door” to reflect the fear of coming out. Elena ( @lamentos_ceramicas_ / @e__bug ) explores grief, Palestine, and the church’s anti-queer history through “Duelo,” and Avery ( @avery.miller.fotografia / @http.avery_ ) processes family, ancestry, and loss through “You’ve Come an Awfully Long Way Just to Say I Love You.”

“Sopas De Letras” is presented by @indianalatinoarts an initiative of @artemexicanoenindiana , featuring artists from @lampindiana , and partnered by @ind.latinxpride , @damienhola , @iyg_indy , @artscouncilindy , & @aby_cortes_creative . The Exhibition is on view until July 12 at 1619 Prospect St in Fountain Square.

Filming/Editing/Writing: Jay Grillo ( @jay_grillo )
Production Assistance: Dani Abdullah ( @ikonik_ivy ) & Rissa Wilson ( @thats_so_rissa )

This series is in partnership with @fonsecaduboisgallery , filmed at the @indyliberationcenter , as an effort to highlight independent artists and uplift marginalized and oppressed communities through the stories behind their work.
