Hi everyone! Welcome to the second post of our Humans of CCLCM series. We are excited to introduce you to Mike!

Name: Mike Komarovsky, Class of 2027
Specialty of Interest: Internal Medicine (potential Cardiology Fellowship)

What does belonging mean to you?
Belonging to me is about being accepted for all the different parts of your identity and who you are. So, for me, not just being a medical student, but being queer, being married, having dogs, loving D&D, loving singing, all the different parts. And I think that that's something that I really experienced here at CCLCM. Everyone's been incredibly accepting, incredibly open about all the different parts of their identities, everyone from the staff, the students, to, you know, people you meet in the hospital. So I've always felt, like, a sense of belonging and being here.

What's an important part of your identity?
I think probably the most important part of my identity right now is being a husband. You know, obviously there are lighter and heavier parts of medical school. Certainly, as you're studying for the STEP exams, being a student is kind of the main thing on your mind. But, as I transition into the beginning of fifth year now and have a little bit less responsibility on my shoulders in terms of school, I've really been focusing more on being a husband.

What is something that we might not know about you by looking at your CV?
Something that's definitely not on my CV is that I am a dog dad of two wonderful dogs, Toad and Daisy. I actually have tattoos of each of them that I have matching ones with my wife. So, this top one is Toad. He is our 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, and then this bottom one is Daisy, our two-year-old Rat Terrier.

What is a Cleveland hidden gem that you love?
Ooh, a hidden gem. I'm trying to think of something that's not super well-known. I don't know if you guys know about Superior Pho. It is a really incredible pho place on East 31st in Asia Town that my wife and I love.

If your life had a soundtrack, what song is on it right now?
I've been listening to a lot of Noah Cahan recently, maybe American Cars. I've been going on a few road trips recently. by @clecliniclcm

Each year, 10 students have the incredible opportunity to attend the annual Cleveland Orchestra Gala at Severance Music Center, thanks to the generous support of Mrs. Norma Lerner!

It was truly an unforgettable evening filled with world-class music, wonderful company, dinner, and dancing. We are incredibly grateful to Mrs. Lerner for her generosity in making it possible for our students to experience such a special celebration of music, community, and the arts. 🎻✨

Hi everyone! Welcome to the Humans of CCLCM series, which was created to showcase members of our diverse community. We are excited to introduce our first feature, Nikhil!

Name: Nikhil Joshi, Class of 2030

Specialty of Interest: Neuro-Onc/Pediatric Neuro-Onc

What brought you here? The opportunity to have personalized mentorship and attention coupled with the ability to learn with my own flexibility at my own pace met all of my criteria for a school. The ability to graduate without paying tuition is an opportunity that I never could have imagined and I am grateful every day. Additionally, my brother is a CWRU student and getting to traverse life away from home together was also a big part of my decision!

What’s a moment that shaped you? My interests have been shaped by watching my grandfather grapple with his cancer diagnosis during adolescence and navigating all of the little nuances that come with conversations about life and death. Seeing these challenges play out firsthand shaped much of my interest.

Things not seen on CV? I love hiking/backpacking and being in nature. I’m not fast, and far from great, but I truly feel at home in this quiet solitude.

What’s an important part of your identity? My identity as a first-generation American has become increasingly important to me as I’ve traversed medical school as it informs the way I seek to practice with my patients and the clinical practice I am beginning to develop. I seek to create a clinical environment that is cognizant of the great nuance that all individuals bring.

What does “belonging” mean to you? Belonging is an important facet of my identity and I recognize how important this feeling can be for our collective education. I find that the CCLCM tight-knit community creates valuable opportunities to hear different perspectives that we can always learn more from, and that these perspectives can help us all become more complete students and leaders.

CLE hidden gem? Coconut ice cream, Mitchell’s.

Current obsession? Pickleballing with Joe, of late.

Soundtrack? Phoebe B, Peter Cat Recording Co. by @clecliniclcm
