Exit interviews are autopsies.

By the time you're asking someone why they're leaving, the decision was usually made weeks or months earlier. The exit interview tells you what happened. It rarely changes the outcome.

The better question is why leaders wait until someone has one foot out the door.

High-performing organizations don't wait for resignation letters to learn how their people are doing. They conduct stay interviews instead, built around five questions:

β€’ What do you look forward to each day when you come to work?
β€’ What are you learning here, and what do you want to learn?
β€’ Why do you stay here?
β€’ When is the last time you thought about leaving, and what prompted it?
β€’ What can I do to make your job better for you?

These conversations don't guarantee people will stay. But they give leaders something an exit interview never can: time to act.

Most turnover isn't a surprise. It's a series of small signals leaders either notice or ignore.

The goal isn't better exit interviews. It's fewer of them. by @clegg.michael

More than 30 years ago, Lindsey Wood Fisher and I met at Radford University. We both met our spouses there, too.

Since then, we have taken very different paths, built different businesses, and developed different frameworks for helping people grow.

Yet when we spoke recently, we discovered something surprising.

Her work centers on culture, communication, and clarity.

Mine centers on connection, culture, and clarity.

Different journeys. Nearly the same destination.

That realization sparked a fascinating conversation about influence, leadership, and why so many accomplished people struggle to recognize the value they already bring to others.

On Monday’s episode of Mind the Gap, Lindsey shares insights from more than two decades of helping entrepreneurs, CEOs, and leadership teams build stronger cultures, communicate more effectively, and lead with intention.

We also explore the foundation of her new program, Her Influence, which is built on a simple but powerful belief:

Influence is not something you earn. It is something you uncover.

Join us as we discuss why seeing yourself clearly may be one of the most important leadership skills you can develop.

Oracle Bet 30,000 Jobs on AI. 3 Questions Should Have Come First.

Ai is taking jobs. It will continue to. My bet is still on people but we have to change how we look at work. And there’s very little time.

My article suggests what companies should be doing before outright cutting people - which is quietly happening in masses. by @clegg.michael

January 28, 1986.

I was in 7th grade science. Watching. Mrs. Hostetler was a finalist in the teachers in space program.

The engineers knew the O-rings would fail in cold temperatures.

They flagged it the night before launch.
They were overruled.

73 seconds after liftoff, the Challenger was gone.

Seven people died. Including Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who won.

The lesson is not about space shuttles.

It is about what happens inside any organization when people cannot speak truth to power, and when leaders have not made it safe to try.

Bad news shouldn’t travel horizontally in organizations. That’s a giveaway that it lacks 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐑𝐨π₯𝐨𝐠𝐒𝐜𝐚π₯ π’πšπŸπžππ².

I have a workshop next week and I’m opening with this story.

Not to be dramatic.

To prove that creating 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐑𝐨π₯𝐨𝐠𝐒𝐜𝐚π₯ π’πšπŸπžππ² isn’t easy - even in life and death situations.

High Thrust people (like me) love starting new things. Taking on new projects. But don't like finishing them.

Some call it the "shiny new toy" syndrome.

It's NOT a flaw. You're just wired that way.

But there are ways to overcome it, where it can be your Superpower.
