grief. if it don’t make sense, it betta make art. by @cleopatrasdaughter

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my dad, Arthur L. Johnson II. 🤎

If you’ve experienced Hattie or BLKFLMMKR you’ve already experienced a piece of his love.

My dad believed in this magazine before there was ever an Issue 001 to hold. He didn’t just encourage me to build it. He invested in it, fully funded it, wrote for it, reviewed it, championed it and reminded anybody who would listen that his daughter made a magazine 😂

Around here, he was the KING of Hattie.

For Issue 001, my dad wrote A Future Written in Crayon, an essay about raising a creative child. Reading his words now feels like one final reminder of just how intentionally he loved, protected and nurtured the artist in not just me and my sister but in every community I’ve participated in and every peer I’ve had.

His passing also brings a reality I’m still learning how to navigate. My father was Hattie’s first and greatest investor. As I grieve him, I’m also figuring out what it looks like to continue this magazine without the person who made so much of its beginning possible.

I don’t have all of those answers yet. But I know I want the archive we started building together to continue. Please give us your grace and patience as we try to figure it out.

Today, we’ve made a permanent home for my dad on Hattie’s website. For the first time, we’re making one of our print-exclusive articles available to read online in full. You can read his Issue 001 essay, watch his 12-minute review of Hattie, learn more about what he made possible, and find ways to help us carry the work forward.

My dad made sure Hattie had a beginning. I’m committed to making sure his investment, belief and love have a future.

Long live the King 🤎.

KING ARTHUR

Surprised my parents with a 5 ft portrait painting of my Dad for his birthday last year.

2 months of working in secret and avoiding being on FaceTime while painting lol. Happy Birthday Dad!

SUGAR HILL WIT IT.

Cast portraits for @dia_annette’s MAMMY IS A STAR staged reading at Hattie McDaniel’s home here in West Adams. Shot these shortly after reading @reshonda_tate’s Queen of Sugar Hill and @kyradavislurie’s The Great Mann, both Historical Fictions on the legendary Hattie McDaniel and of course after launching Hattie Magazine.

This was my first visit to at on the lil stoop and wondered all about who has come back and forth through this gate. What this house felt like the night she won the Oscar? Why isn’t the house being preserved properly? So many thoughts, so much inspiration. So much more over at www.southernfriedminimalism.com by @cleopatrasdaughter

Been itching to get back to my paint practice. 24 hrs in a day and work and Hattie owns a lot of them but I have soooooo many stories ready to unfold on canvas soon.

So thankful for this wonderful surprise and divine reminder via @shanikahillocks’s @homeworthy episode featuring my artwork Willie’s Melons. Thank you @jellllyjams for sending my way — it was so needed ✨🫂
