The mask...
The mask culture is a widely embraced practice across and beyound the African continent. It plays on the principle of identity. Usually the mask conceals the identity of it bearer while revealing one that is heavier.

Once the mask comes on, it no longer about who bears it but about the essence of the mask itself.

This handrawn piece is made on natural fiber for comfortability, breathability and ease. It also features coconut shells as buttons .

It’s the continuation of our exploration on how we can use design to make a piece of fabric embody peace.

This project cut across materiality to process, to design. The choice of linen/cotton for this piece was intentional as it serves as the most natural foundation to making a piece that embodies peace. Hand made in Ibadan,Nigeria using tye indigenous Adire alabela textile designing method

The Afowoba F’iile pattern created from a rare hand-dyed textile design process

Using hands dipped directly into dye, the process explored the ephemeral nature of life—how we touch, move through the world, and leave. Though life itself is fleeting, the marks we leave behind can endure far beyond us.

If you were given access to all the resources required, what would you create?

This question led to the creation of this genuinely amazing 1-of-1 piece by one of the women currently in our Learn and Earn Program.

Beyond the designs we engage them with daily in the studio, we wanted to give them the freedom to create something they had always dreamed of making. And it is obvious how beautifully they dream.

Relating this to the larger scale of life itself, I ask:
If you were given access to all that you need, what would you create?

This 1-of-1 piece is handmade on a 50 × 70-inch, silky-face, medium-weight 100% cotton fabric, using the traditional batik fabric-designing method.
