On September 19th, in commemoration of America’s 250th, JHC gave the 2026 Jay Medals for Service to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed and Lincoln historian Harold Holzer. The awards recognize Gordon-Reed and Holzer’s ongoing creation of vital access points for generations of people to place themselves in the American story. Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson presented the medal to Professor Gordon-Reed. New York military historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose presented the medal to Professor Holzer.
A highlight of the night was a message of congratulations and inspiration from Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III. Guests to the Jay Estate included American historians and scholars, teachers, preservationists, Jay descendants, descendants of Rye’s earliest Afro-Indigenous families, government officials, civic advocates, and volunteers who have helped and continue to protect this significant New York State Park and Historic Site and all its stories.

In her acceptance speech, Gordon-Reed detailed the doubts and opposition she met during years of researching the relationship of Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings and their biological children; by challenging the contradictory actions of the author of the Declaration of Independence, she was able to restore the forgotten voices of the Hemings family and give them gravity and value. Switching focus from early American history to the 19th century, Holzer spoke about the commonalities and disparities between abolitionist John Jay II and Abraham Lincoln as they tackled the complex issue of slavery left unresolved by the founders.

As we head into a whirl of red, white and blue, we’re looking back at hues of blue and white! Thanks to everyone who made Classic Design lecture & luncheon such a success! Hugely grateful to Genevieve Wheeler Brown @gwheelerbrown who shared the research rapture behind her book Beyond Blue and White: The Hidden History of Delftware and the Women Behind the Iconic Ceramic with a design-minded audience. She deftly traced the origins of 16th & 17th century Dutch tin-glazed pottery and the collecting craze that followed it. Her talk June 17th was preceded by a tour of the Jay Estate Gardens recently revitalized by landscape architect Thomas Woltz. Prior to the transformation of the gardens, fragments of authentic Jay family Delftware were discovered through monitored archaeological studies of the site. These objects of material culture help inform narratives about the Jay family as well as the enslaved men and women who worked for them and handled the precious earthenware.
Wheeler Brown also noted the connections between John Jay’s National Historic Landmark home in Rye and the 1748 Van Cortlandt House @vchmnyc the Bronx’s oldest surviving building maintained by the @nscda Guests enjoyed delicious fare from @scarfaircatering and @sweetlisascakes.ct overlooking the undisturbed 10,000 year old Jay Meadow.
