I have had the greatest pleasure of working with wonderful, dear clients who reside at the former home of renowned photographer @slimaaronsofficial in #bedford . This 200 foot long “berm garden” has been plotted since last summer and this past Friday, I worked with my trusted crew to install the fourth planting of additional perennials and ground covers to the tune of approximately 150 plants. After a massive removal of extraordinarily happily-spreading Ostrich ferns (who knew?!!), we proceeded to add a ratio of 70% natives to 30% “CWD-approved” non-natives to the space.
Lots to consider when you are working with a winding 200 foot long (wide?) and 6-7 foot deep berm-like structure. 1. Blocking the sounds and sights from the road were the key objectives behind the berm itself. 2. From there, it was about including tall evergreens that would withstand the partial sun and shade conditions, and how to address the Rhododendron maximums scattered along the top from left to right. 3. Adding color but ensuring not to over repeat the color because my clients and I both love to plant in drifts or swaths. 4. Making this into a true garden space and not just a “berm” to shield noise & views. Thus creating an entertainment space adjacent to the garden - berm. As you go through the photos, notice Slim’s use of color. I specifically chose the beautiful light pinks of #kalmialatofolia ; the lush greens of ferns, #asarumcanadense and #ladysmantle along with the periwinkle light blue & violet of #aquilegia (columbine), #mertensiavirginica , #polemoniumreptans. From there we introduced different textures and colors in the form of Japanese and Chinese Astilbes, #tiarellacordifolia , #whitewoodaster all to complement the previously planted #amsoniahubrichtii , #phloxdivaricata , #leucothoeaxillaris , #japaneseanemonehonorinejobert &
#hellebores w/ #polystichumacrostichoides.
The line of existing rhodies became the “book-ends” which allowed us to then place several #hamamelisvirginiana , #callicarpaamericana , #forhergillagardenii along with a row of #americanhollies , #kalmialatifolia & underlying #leucothoeaxillaris & #hydrangeas. @cliffwalkdesigns #moretocome 🩵

Starting your own business is a lot. There will be ups and downs and challenges that throw you off balance. There will be days where you get to the office bright and early and there will be days you dread going in. Like all jobs, you'll feel all of the emotions. Flashback to bringing my family last year to @middletonplacefoundation in Charleston, South Carolina. America’s oldest landscape garden and birthplace of Andrew Middleton, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Andrew’s father, Henry, designed the gardens starting in 1741. The result was a marriage of traditional French design - precise geometry, symmetry, order — with curving grass terraces and serpentine woodlands reflective of traditional English landscapes. The curving grass terraces are among the most impressive features there.
The second photo shows a plaque acknowledging that this remarkable design was executed and realized by the hands and extreme hard work of slave labour. Few historical sites make mention of this for the visiting public. As I write this post, I think of how land and our work with the land throughout history has affected racial inequality, tension and more. I often think that our coming together to work collectively and help save the land for our future generations may heal some of these deep wounds. A topic to be explored further….

With Thanksgiving upon us, it seems appropriate to honor the last blooms in the garden, as the beds prepare to sleep for the winter. It is always a bittersweet moment. ✨🌱
Of note, this “garden record” book in which I placed the bits I “foraged” this morning, shows how gardeners used to track progress and stay organized throughout the seasons. Found at a favorite antique spot in Vermont’s North Hero Island, these columns would have been filled in lovingly by hand….
I’ve kept my own records over the years, but now I’ve more or less memorized my processes, successes, failures (there have been several!) and I mentally file them away.

We all think of spring as the planting season - we are so eager for life, rebirth, color, and the list goes on. In fact, fall is really the best time to plant. The roots will settle in gently and become established before the winter frost, whereas in the spring we may be allowing them less time to take place before the heat rises and the scorching sun beats down. It’s not always what’s best for us.
