POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Thanks to everyone who came to see “Halfway to the Sun”, which was on show at Somers Gallery until yesterday. The exhibition showcased a prototype of David Rickard’s proposed public art installation curated by Climate Art. David and I have been working on this site-specific project for over three years, and seeing the true enthusiasm and joy from the residents of Somers Town and everyone else who saw the show meant a lot.
We are fundraising for this innovative public art commission, so do get in touch if yo want to get involved. Huge thanks to AKT II, Camden Council, Euston Town Bid, Transition, and Maylim for making this exhibition a reality. by @climateartuk

✨PV 15 Sep 6-8 pm; 16-17 Sep 9-5 pm✨

From the very building of the Euston Road in the 1750s, Somers Town and the surrounding area have been subject to extensive and continuous development. According to residents, since the 1960s, construction has been almost constant, and many of the current large-scale development projects are set to continue at least until 2033. Unsurprisingly, the environmental impact on Somers Town over the decades has been severe, involving increased air pollution.

Climate Art proposes a temporary artistic intervention on Chalton Street that would draw attention and offer possible creative solutions to this key environmental concern. Celebrating the positive community-led transformation, this installation is also designed to attract visitors to Chalton Street and its open-air market.

This exhibition is part of the @l_d_f_official. Supported by @akt_ii, it showcases the ideas for the future piece envisaged by IVAAIU City and A-Axis Architects (Jihyun Lee, Sung-Su Park, Hancheol So, Hiroto Takeuchi, and Donguk Agos Lee), David Rickard, and Ling Tan, Usman Haque.

We are pleased to present the third shortlisted artists: @ling_ql and @usman_haque

For 2022 @l_d_f_official Ling and Usman conceived and designed a pop-up structure as part of the Low Carbon Chinatown initiative. Built using low-carbon materials and processes, it was installed in #chinatownlondon The structure was used to host a series of sit-down tastings featuring low-carbon dishes chosen and developed by London’s East and South East Asian communities, alongside a data scientist and acclaimed Asian food writers.

Project was supported by structural engineers @atelier.one fabricated by Gary Campbell and production managed by Nick Murray @cassettewitch

Another piece by @david_rickard_ is ‘International Airspace’
(2019-2020) global air samples within Pyrex glass.

With the signing of the Paris Convention in 1919, national borders were elevated from the ground to dissect the atmosphere into national airspaces. Aligned with inland borders and set twelve nautical miles from coastlines, these new invisible boundaries responded to the recent arrival of air power. Governance of the sky formed the principles of co-operation needed for international air travel and created vast areas of shared in-between sky known as ‘international airspace’.

Referencing Duchamp’s ‘Air de Paris’ also 1919, ‘International Airspace’ extends beyond a local airspace through collaboration with people in the twenty-seven signing countries of the Paris Convention, bringing together air samples in an attempt to form a new fragile international airspace built on trust and collaboration.

Another work by @ivaaiu_city_planning @aaxisarchitects we showcase is ‘Washed.’

‘Washed’ is a real-time audio-visual work about coastal erosion in South Korea and the United Kingdom. Using the open-source coastal monitoring data as an element, this piece recomposes how the coastal sediments are getting washed away by the ocean wave at any given moment. Vibrant moving particles synced up with the real-time data send the message of how climate change is happening in our environment at this very moment.

material: real-time audio-visual
currently on show @incheon_airport as a part of the group exhibition <In Sync>
commissioned by Paradise Cultural Foundation (2023), The Untitled Void (2022)

As the shortlisted artists work on their proposals for our upcoming commission in Somers Town, we begin a series of posts highlighting some of their past work and introducing them to our audience.

First up are Seoul and London-based @ivaaiu_city_planning @aaxisarchitects with their work ‘esc1’

The primary goal of ‘esc1’ is to help temporary and permanent climate refugees from wildfires to be resilient. Today, people’s lifestyles depend highly on electricity, radio transmission, and the road network. When wildfires break out, people potentially lose their electrical power supply, internet connection, and mobility, making them helpless until the rescue comes. Using innovative technologies, ‘esc1’ is designed to help temporary and permanent climate refugees caused by wildfires.
