For Jamaica’s fisherfolk, the sea has always been a critical source of food, livelihood, freedom and the future. It’s their pantry, workplace, and cultural centre, but as global companies look to the minerals lying deep below the ocean floor, questions emerge: what will happen to the fishers who rely on these waters when the seabed itself becomes a resource to be exploited?

The way that question is answered could shape the future of Jamaica’s fisheries, and resilience among communities is already bearing the brunt of climate change events. Deep-sea mining may generate sediment plumes, destroy habitats and reduce the biodiversity that cascades through the food chain, placing fisherfolk in the middle of an uncertain ocean economy.

What is deep-sea mining?
The National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) defines deep-sea mining (DSM) as the “process of collecting mineral resources from the ocean floor, usually more than 1,000 metres below the surface.” These resources contain cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel and other rare elements used to make electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, solar panels and everyday electronics.

Despite being at the heart of the world’s clean-energy drive, the mining of these elements raises serious environmental concerns. For Jamaica’s fisherfolk, the situation may mean that some of the minerals driving climate solutions elsewhere could bring new risks to the waters they depend on.

🌊 Beyond the beaches lies another Dominican Republic.

When we think of the Dominican Republic, we might picture rhythm, flavour, sun, sand and sea. But beneath those familiar waters lies a deep ocean that is just as important, and far less understood.

As the global debate over deep-sea mining intensifies, what could this emerging industry mean for the Dominican Republic?

In her story, Carolina Pichardo (@carolinapichardoh) looks beyond the beaches to explore the country’s deep sea, its position on deep-sea mining, and the wider questions facing Caribbean countries as decisions about the future of the ocean take shape.

Because protecting the Caribbean’s ocean means looking beyond the shoreline. 🌎🇩🇴

🌊 What could deep-sea mining mean for Antigua & Barbuda?

As the global debate over deep-sea mining continues, Antigua & Barbuda is considering what the emerging industry could mean for its ocean, economy, and coastal communities.

In her latest story, Elesha George (@astoldbyelesha) explores the country’s position on deep-sea mining, the potential opportunities and environmental concerns, and the questions Caribbean countries need to consider as international rules for the industry take shape.

🌊 Who gets to decide the future of the Caribbean’s deep ocean?

As deep-sea mining moves closer to becoming a reality, Caribbean governments are grappling with questions of economics, environmental risk, science and regional cooperation.

In his latest story, Ryan Bachoo explores Trinidad and Tobago’s position and the growing divisions across the region over whether to support, pause or oppose the emerging industry.

The Caribbean needs a voice in these decisions. 🌊🇹🇹🌎

🌊 A major new financing boost for protecting the Caribbean’s marine spaces.

The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund has launched a US$250 million Marine Protected Areas Financing Facility, aimed at helping countries across the region strengthen, expand and sustainably finance marine protected areas.

Announced at the 11th Our Ocean Conference, the facility could provide much-needed long-term financing for protecting marine ecosystems, supporting coastal communities and strengthening the resilience of the Caribbean’s ocean.

But financing is only part of the picture. How these resources are accessed, distributed and translated into meaningful conservation on the ground will matter just as much.

🌎 Read the full story by Tyrell Gittens ( @tyrellgittens), to learn more about what this new facility could mean for the Caribbean’s oceans.

🌊 The Caribbean is at a crossroads beneath the surface.

The deep sea holds ecosystems we are only beginning to understand.

As the push to regulate deep-sea mining gathers momentum, Caribbean governments are facing difficult questions: Should the region pursue the economic opportunities, pause until more is known, or oppose the industry altogether?

Ryan Bachoo explores the growing divisions across the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago’s position, and the calls for stronger safeguards, better science and meaningful regional consultation before decisions are made.

Because when it comes to the future of our ocean, what we decide now could shape what remains for generations to come. 🌊🇹🇹🌎

Protected areas don’t manage themselves. People do. 🌊

Effective ocean conservation takes more than drawing boundaries on a map. It requires empowered communities, strong governance, and investment in the people protecting our oceans.
