You’ve probably heard people talk about the Blue Zone at COP. But what exactly is it, and why is it called blue? The Blue Zone is the official UN-managed conference area where climate negotiations, formal meetings and other conference activities take place. But here’s something interesting: even with access to the Blue Zone, you can’t enter every meeting. Swipe through to understand what happens inside and remember this: 🔵 BLUE = UN-managed official COP space. #explore #COP31 #BlueZone #UNFCCC #ClimateEducation

🇯🇲 For Jamaica’s fisherfolk, the sea has always been a critical source of food, livelihood, freedom and the future. It’s their pantry, workplace, and cultural centre, but as global companies look to the minerals lying deep below the ocean floor, questions emerge: what will happen to the fishers who rely on these waters when the seabed itself becomes a resource to be exploited? The way that question is answered could shape the future of Jamaica’s fisheries, and resilience among communities is already bearing the brunt of climate change events. Deep-sea mining may generate sediment plumes, destroy habitats and reduce the biodiversity that cascades through the food chain, placing fisherfolk in the middle of an uncertain ocean economy. What is deep-sea mining? The National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) defines deep-sea mining (DSM) as the “process of collecting mineral resources from the ocean floor, usually more than 1,000 metres below the surface.” These resources contain cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel and other rare elements used to make electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines, solar panels and everyday electronics. Despite being at the heart of the world’s clean-energy drive, the mining of these elements raises serious environmental concerns. For Jamaica’s fisherfolk, the situation may mean that some of the minerals driving climate solutions elsewhere could bring new risks to the waters they depend on. Global debate, local stakes Deep-sea mining has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental debates of our time, with wide-ranging implications for countries like Jamaica, whose identity and economy are so closely linked to the ocean. While the industry is not currently being considered in Jamaican waters, the conversations around it raise pressing questions of governance, the impact on livelihoods, and ecological resilience.

For many informal settlements, connecting homes to Johannesburg’s conventional electricity grid is not straightforward. Land-use restrictions, unsafe locations, environmental risks and inadequate infrastructure can all stand in the way. City Power’s microgrid programme was designed to provide an alternative, using solar, battery storage and other technologies to bring electricity to settlements where conventional grid connections are difficult. Five informal settlements were selected for the programme, with systems designed to provide electricity while allowing capacity to be expanded as demand grows. But bringing power to these communities comes with its own challenges, from illegal connections and security to maintenance and long-term sustainability. Our #PowerTracker investigation looks at how the programme works, what it has cost and what City Power has learned so far. 🌊 Beyond the beaches lies another Dominican Republic. When we think of the Dominican Republic, we might picture rhythm, flavour, sun, sand and sea. But beneath those familiar waters lies a deep ocean that is just as important, and far less understood. As the global debate over deep-sea mining intensifies, what could this emerging industry mean for the Dominican Republic? In her story, Carolina Pichardo (@carolinapichardoh) looks beyond the beaches to explore the country’s deep sea, its position on deep-sea mining, and the wider questions facing Caribbean countries as decisions about the future of the ocean take shape. Because protecting the Caribbean’s ocean means looking beyond the shoreline. 🌎🇩🇴 📰 Read the full story at climatetrackercaribbean.org.
