Building a great climbing training plan doesn’t start with picking the perfect workouts. It starts with understanding where you are now, how much you’re currently training, and what your life will actually allow you to do consistently.

In Part 1 of this four-part series, Steve lays out the foundation for building a structured, progressive, and realistic winter training plan.

Before we worry about optimizing individual workouts, we’ll start by looking at what you’ve actually been doing, how much time you have available, and how to build training into the reality of your schedule. The goal is to start conservatively, establish consistency, and create a foundation that we can build on throughout the winter.

I get the hunch that most climbers, if they were asked, would rather not train for climbing. Ever. If they could, they would be the best version of themselves on the rock by just climbing, no hangboarding - only redpointing flawlessly. If you've read anything by Steve Bechtel you've probably heard him say, "If I didn't have to train I wouldn't, but I like what training affords me.""

You won’t know what works for you until you try - put yourself in a position to adapt, learn, and find out what works for you!

"Most of us start with goals, but as you can see, this is our third question. I do this on purpose, since eliminating issues and assessing past performance are ultimately more useful than dreaming big. This is a huge issue for me, personally. I get a spreadsheet built out, start putting sessions in, start thinking of routes I’d like to do, and soon I have twice as much gym time as last year—and a tick list as long as my arm.

Unless you had significant time off from climbing, or were coming off of an injury or illness last year, this year should look pretty similar, with just small increases in the time you plan to put in and the routes you plan to send."

"Progression is similar to overload, but is a more encompassing principle. Yes, we need to increase the load on the athlete over the course of a cycle and over the course of a career, but we also need that athlete to progress the complexity of training."

The single-class characters had fewer abilities, but they gained noticeably as the game progressed. Where, at first, specializing seemed lame, it became a secret weapon. Even though my multi-class character could do all kinds of stuff, my abilities lagged far behind, and it just got worse as the game went on.

And this is the lesson I now pull from those many hours spent rolling dice and having imaginary adventures. The more qualities you try to develop, the worse it’s going to go.
