Some crappy send footy, both cruxes
This send today is a pretty big motivator for a number of reasons. It's been quite rollercoaster of a year for me and i feel like the dawn is breaking both personally and professionally, and now the ankle post surgery feels almost about 100%. Slowly getting around to a new, consistent, and better normal - sending this is a symbolic reminder for a lot of different things.
Psyched that my foot is working again and for the support today. This one was a good test piece for the new hardware in my ankle with all the awful feet. Really might be one of the best all time. When i first saw the classic footage of this thing... intimidating. Stands up to its reputation for being nails hard and extremely fun. Nothing like hurling winds at the top of endless wall to remind you why you like this place so much - and no one brings to stoke like Pete on belay.

Finished mural for @greenheartcoop in the New River Gorge.
Two days of painting rhododendrons and local birds. Huge thank you to Logan for giving me full artistic freedom, and for the opportunity to paint 3 different murals in this location, this being the 3rd. It's been special to paint here. I've learned so much about myself on these 3 projects and i think it has a lot do with timing.

Ya know what's funny. When i started traveling here to climb in 2020, i was on a path toward getting my MFA in ceramics at Southern Illinois. Not a lot of people know that I accepted the offer and then backed out. I spent 3 years working with clay and rarely painting. But the choice felt wrong and everything was colliding. Clay quickly became a long lost friend and my relationship to it changed. The only things i began to care about were climbing and painting. I took a mural opportunity in 2021 and never looked back. Well maybe i looked back a few times 😅.

I was 26 when this all changed and now I'm 32. I'm still an idiot just as i was then, but I'm a much more consistent, efficient, disciplined and resourceful idiot. So many lessons. And i don't lose my keys as often now.

Of course the New River gorge is special. That's obvious to anyone who travels there and understands that place. But the meaning for me is evolving. Through these murals it's not just about climbing there. I finally have out of state mural work which has always been a career goal of mine - here i am, painting in a place that pulled me to it for a completely different reason. It's just cool how life can steer you in different directions based on choices. I used to feel guilty at times about not going to get my MFA. That finally stopped a few years ago. When i paint things like this, in a place i love for an entirely different reason, i get confident that I'm exactly where i need to be. It's just a stepping stone in the life long path of art. But it's a step that felt like needed to be reflected on and shared. And I love paint.

James climbing steel worker, 12c at torrent falls.

Coming to the red this trip, i learned i was at 96 total 5.12's. i keep a list of everything I've ever sent but I never really tallied anything up until some of my friends hit their century mark recently. We had the privilege of going to Torrent falls today. Beautiful crag. There's a wall with a 12a, 12b, 12c, and 12d right next to each other. James thought it would be fun to try them all and i agreed. We flashed them all while and i got to 100. Very pumped. Great way to end the 2nd day. Thanks to new friends and old for the unique experience today by @climbingandthings
