How to go from desktop support to cloud engineer: just avoid these 2 mistakes.

Mistake 1 is aiming straight at Cloud Engineer and skipping the rung above you. Three rejections in a row is the signal. Mistake 2 is treating scripting as an obstacle, when it is the bridge that turns what you already do into cloud experience.

Your pipeline doesn’t need a password to deploy to Azure.

Most GitHub Actions to Azure setups still keep a client secret in GitHub. It expires, someone has to rotate it, and if it leaks, anyone can sign in as your pipeline.

Federated credentials (OIDC) remove it. GitHub proves which repo and branch is asking, Entra ID checks that against what you set up, and the run gets a short-lived token. There’s nothing stored to rotate.

🔐 Add a federated credential to your app registration for your repo and branch
🔑 Save the client, tenant and subscription IDs in GitHub (IDs, not secrets)
⚙️ Add permissions: id-token: write to the workflow and sign in with azure/login@v2
🚨 Using environments? Each one needs its own credential, or you get AADSTS700213

Claude Code is a lot more useful on cloud work once it can see your Azure subscription.

Here’s the setup, in three steps 👇

⌨️ Step 1: install it with one command. curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash, or npm install -g anthropic-ai/claude-code. Then cd into your repo and type claude.
🔌 Step 2: connect the Azure MCP. MCP is the Model Context Protocol, how Claude reaches your tools. It reads your resources, config and costs using the az login you already have. Start read-only.
📝 Step 3: write a CLAUDE.md once. Run /init for a first draft, add your stack in three lines and the rules you repeat most. Claude reads it every session.
