New detached ADU project in the Fremont hills for multigenerational living. The design weaves in and out between an old growth redwood tree and a beautiful mature oak tree.

It’s a tricky site - not just because of the old growth trees - but also because the site overlaps the Hayward fault and is also in a landslide zone. But the view down towards the valley is breathtaking, and the home will take full advantage of it!

What started as a kitchen renovation has slowly evolved into a reconfiguration of the home’s whole floor plan. We had to address lots of functional issues our clients were having with their existing home, which surface-level aesthetic updates were not going to solve.

At the same time, there was a great opportunity to add an interior stair to expand into the underutilized, unfinished downstairs space, where we could add a laundry room, guest suite, and family room with a direct connection to the backyard.

Here are some of our initial renderings of the new interior spaces.

We added a primary bathroom in what is currently an inefficient closet. The originally tiny kitchen has been opened up for better hosting and more generous flow when cooking and eating together as a family. When a young family bought this house in SF Bay Area, they approached us because the kitchen was dark, cramped, and felt separated from the rest of the home.

We widened the opening between the kitchen and dining room to create a brighter and more spacious feel. This simple but impactful move also allowed a direct visual connection between the kitchen and where the kids spent much of their time. A large pantry cabinet on the left provided tons of organized storage space.

New Oakland project in the works that we’re so excited about!

As always, starting from the floor plan… existing pain points:
- kitchen felt cramped, small, and disconnected
- circuitous path to the stairs leading to the lower floor
- inefficient hall bath layout
- primary bath was only half bath
- needed more efficient storage and designated desk space in primary bedroom

With precise plan updates, we added tons of storage, opened walls for light and connection, and solved the circulation problem between upstairs and downstairs. Hall bath became spacious and functional, and we fitted a full primary bathroom in a limited footprint.

It’s always such a privilege to transform our clients’ homes - and by extension, their lives. We don’t take that responsibility lightly.

It’s been so crazy busy this year and I’ve just gotten to posting these photos of a small project we finished last fall 🤣😅

The homeowners reached out to us because the aging bathrooms in their well-loved home were becoming a source of frustration to their family. With two cats and two toddlers, they needed tons of storage, flexibility, and of course a design that would make the space truly belong to the craftsman-style house. We added a large walnut vanity, marble surfaces, and colorful handmade tiles to bring richness to the space.

Elevation of a primary bedroom

The existing bedroom was oversized with a tall, sloping ceiling and west-facing clerestory windows that blasted your face if you ever dared to take an afternoon nap.

We reconfigured the closet and moved the bed to a non-glaring location. Adding a custom headboard grounded the bed within the oversized space and gave the room some focus.

New year, new posts! It’s hard to juggle all the small business owner responsibilities, with actual project work, with social media stuff…but we’re gonna try! 😅

Love love love how this sf bathroom turned out. The skylights flood the space with natural light. Natural stone floors and handmade wall tile lend such a richness to the pastel palette. We’ve been so bad about social media lately but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy IRL!

We were brought on to redesign this split-level home in Millbrae, focusing on 3 main spaces:

1. Entryway - providing a bench/landing area for when you enter the house

2. Home office - the owners had desks in the corner of the family room but wanted a dedicated space to work from home. We carved space out of the too-large primary bedroom, rearranged the primary bath, and pushed out to the back to create the perfect home office.

3. Family room - originally disjointed and underused, we removed a defunct brick fireplace, re-laid out furniture and added built-in millwork to delineate uses - there will be a TV area with ample storage, a music corner w a baby grand piano, and an oversized hidden sliding door to transform the room into a guest space.

We always, always start with architecture and space planning for every project. More than colors, palettes, or products, our biggest goal is to make sure the finished project will WORK for the homeowner, based on their particular lifestyle, life stage, and family makeup.

Reimagining a classic Craftsman ranch home in Albany, CA ✨ In the living room near the entry, we introduced custom built-in’s to create a functional and stylish entry vestibule. The design features a tall coat cabinet, a bench with drawers for shoe storage, and a solid oak slat accent wall with brass hooks for hats and bags. Thoughtful space planning transformed an underused, awkward corner into a highly functional area that seamlessly integrates with the home’s flow.
