👇🏼 Guide to Charlotte’s Most Popular Suburbs
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi, I’m Grace 👋🏼

I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina from Pennsylvania in 2020 without really knowing what life here would look like. I didn’t have a plan, just packed up, moved south, and never looked back.

After 2 years of living in Charlotte, we ended up falling in love with the Lake Norman area. Now my husband and our two pups call Denver, NC home.

We love still being able to commute into the city while being able to enjoy the lake every weekend.

Starting over in a new state taught me a lot. How important community is. How much your environment matters. And how overwhelming a move can feel when you don’t know where to start.

That’s why I do what I do now.

I help people make smart moving decisions throughout Charlotte, Lake Norman, and the surrounding areas with clarity and confidence. You’re never just a transaction to me. I’m big on communication, strategy, and making sure you feel supported every step of the way.

Here you’ll find
Charlotte events and things to do
The best of Lake Norman living
Market insights and new listings

Thinking about relocating to Charlotte or Lake Norman in 2026?

I moved here at 22 without ever visiting first.

No friends. No family. No clue what areas made sense. I figured a lot of it out as I went and honestly learned some things the hard way.

Now my clients don’t have to.

If you’re considering a move here, there’s a smarter way to do it. A clear plan. The right neighborhoods. The right price points. A strategy that makes the move feel exciting instead of overwhelming.

This is exactly how I walk my relocation clients through it:

First, I send you my exclusive Charlotte + Lake Norman neighborhood guide.
Then we jump on a call to talk through your goals, timeline, and budget.
We build a custom home search around what actually fits your lifestyle.
When you visit, I map out 1 to 3 intentional days so you can see homes and experience the area the right way.
After, I send a recap and we move forward confidently.

If Charlotte has been on your radar, that’s probably not random.

Comment “Charlotte Bound” and I’ll send you my full relocation guide with:

✔ Popular neighborhoods and suburbs
✔ Median home prices
✔ Lifestyle breakdowns and local favorites

It's crazy to look back and see how much has changed in just 6 years.

I can't imagine what it's like for those that have been here their whole lives.

Let's be honest, when you think of moving from out of state you hear about the cost of living in North Carolina.

And 6 years ago, the cost of living was great.

But since then…home prices skyrocketed.

I've seen homes almost double in price since they last sold prior to Covid.

The most desirable neighborhoods with top rated school districts now have entry prices of $800k.

So is it still worth it?

For a lot of families leaving the Northeast…yes. But buying here looks different now than it did in 2020.

Here's what you need to know before you buy:

✅ It's still more affordable than where you're coming from. Property taxes and insurance are lower, and you still get more space and newer homes for your money.

✅ Affordable doesn't mean cheap anymore. Know what homes actually cost in the areas you're considering so you're not caught off guard.

✅ The most talked about suburbs aren't your only option. Towns like Denver and Sherrills Ford can give you more space and that lake or small town lifestyle for less.

✅ New construction can work in your favor. Builders often offer incentives that help with your rate or closing costs.

✅ Buyers have more leverage than they did a few years ago. You can take your time, compare neighborhoods, and negotiate.

✅ Location matters more than ever. Choosing the wrong pocket for your commute or lifestyle is the most expensive mistake I see people make.

The Charlotte I moved to 6 years ago isn't what it was, but growth is not a bad thing.

Now there's also more opportunity, more options, new restaurants to try, and a growing economy.

And the reasons we came are still here. The sunshine, the lake, the community, and a pace of life that's hard to find anywhere else.

You just have to be more strategic about where you land.

Here’s my honest opinion…

You don’t need another post saying “every suburb is great.” You want the real take from someone who has actually lived here, learned the area the hard way, and knows where we spend most of our time.

I moved to Charlotte almost 7 years ago without ever visiting before…

I didn’t know anything about the area except that I wanted warmer weather.

We picked a random rental home close to the city and quickly realized there was so much to learn about Charlotte.

Only a few months after we moved here, some friends invited us out on their boat on Lake Norman.

We never even knew Lake Norman existed before moving here, but we instantly fell in love.

After living in Philly for years and then living close to the city in Charlotte, we knew the suburbs were where we wanted to land.

Our weekends are spent on the lake, golfing, or heading into Charlotte for dinner and a night out.

With both of us working in the city, it was all about convenience and the day to day life we wanted to live.

Knowing what we know now, here’s where we’d focus:

✅ Huntersville, NC - Honestly, if we did it all over again, this is probably where we’d start. You’re just south of Lake Norman, so you still get the lake lifestyle, but you’re only about 20 minutes from the city. We’re always at Birkdale Village for dinner, shopping, or the farmers market, so being close to it would be a huge perk.

✅ Ballantyne - If convenience was our top priority, this is where I’d look. Everything you need is right there…restaurants, shopping, and some of the best golf courses around Charlotte. It’s an easy commute into the city, and it feels convenient without feeling crowded.

✅ Davidson, NC - This one just has so much charm. It’s the kind of town where you can grab coffee downtown, walk to dinner, and actually know your neighbors. The lake is only minutes away, and it has that small town feel that’s hard to find this close to Charlotte.

These areas aren’t the right fit for everyone. But if you relate to our story, they’re where I’d start.

Comment MYERS PARK for the listing details.

This might be the best backyard in Myers Park…

Almost 1.3 acres just steps from the Duke Mansion 🤯

This is a true estate and gives you something that’s almost impossible to find this close to the city: space, privacy, and a backyard that feels like your own private resort.

And the backyard…

✅ Heated saltwater pool and spa

✅ Basketball/pickleball court

✅ Putting green

✅ Baseball batting cage

✅ Covered outdoor entertaining area with its own full bath and kitchenette

✅ Expansive turf lawn with mature trees for perfect afternoon shade

It’s the kind of yard you can enjoy all year round, the kids never want to come inside, and weekends are spent hosting at home instead of going out.

The home itself was fully renovated in 2023 and you can feel the difference the second you walk in. Waterworks fixtures, Visual Comfort lighting, new wide-plank hardwood floors, and steel accent windows and doors throughout.

There’s a primary suite on the main level plus a second primary upstairs, 5 bedrooms in the main house, and two separate guest suites above the garages. Perfect for guests, a gym, an office, or multigenerational living.

The property is fully fenced and gated with two private entrances, including a grand circular drive overlooking the original historic Myers Park park.

And…there’s a 5-car garage.

The location? You’re walking distance to neighborhood restaurants and shops and just minutes from Uptown and SouthPark. Plus, no HOA.

Homes like this truly don’t come up often in Myers Park.

It’s crazy that it’s been almost 7 years since I packed up my car and moved to Charlotte.

My husband and I moved here knowing nobody. I had never even visited Charlotte before until the day I moved here.

And now? I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home.

I’m not ashamed to admit…

1️⃣ Starting over can feel overwhelming, but it’s been the best thing we’ve ever done for ourselves.

2️⃣ I didn’t realize how much always being in gray, cloudy weather was affecting my mood. Even in the middle of winter, the sun is still shining here.

3️⃣ I love that I still get to experience all 4 seasons. Fall is my absolute favorite here. The perfect temperature and so much to do outside.

4️⃣ Anything under 70 degrees feels cold to me now.

5️⃣ I’ve picked up hobbies I never imagined myself doing. When you can spend this much time outside, you start saying yes to everything. And there’s no shortage of golf courses in Charlotte.

6️⃣ I don’t own a snow shovel. Not even a backup. It’s not needed. If it does snow, it’s gone by the afternoon.

7️⃣ I was shocked by how nice our neighbors and even strangers were to us when we first moved here. That’s not the norm up north.

8️⃣ You get to build your own community. So many people here are transplants too, so everyone is looking to meet new people. It’s so much easier to make friends than I expected.

9️⃣ I drive through neighborhoods every day and am still discovering pockets around Charlotte I haven’t discovered before. The suburbs around Charlotte are massive and you can truly find any type of lifestyle you want here.

🔟 I don’t think I’ll ever leave.

Was leaving my hometown easy? No.

Was it worth it? 100%.

👉🏼 If you’ve been thinking about making a move out of the Northeast and Charlotte keeps popping up for you, there’s probably a reason.

Comment 4320 for the listing details.

If you’re coming from out of state, you may not know that homes with a basement are rare in the Charlotte area. But this one has it.

The finished in this home were truly thought out. The living room centers on a floor-to-ceiling tiled fireplace with a floating mantel, and it opens right into a kitchen that’s built for real life and easy entertaining. Think an oversized black island, quartz counters, a KitchenAid gas cooktop, a walk-in pantry, and a butler’s pantry with a beverage cooler for when you host.

The main level also gives you a private office behind glass French doors, a drop zone off the garage, and a bedroom with a full bath, which is perfect for guests, parents, or multigenerational living.

Upstairs, the primary suite feels like a retreat with a tray ceiling and a spa-style bath: a freestanding soaking tub, an oversized rain-head shower, dual quartz vanities, and a large walk-in closet. Three more bedrooms (one with its own bath), a big loft, and a laundry room with a sink round out the second floor.

And then there’s the walk-out basement, roughly 1,600 square feet already plumbed for a bath and ready to become your gym, theater, or in-law suite. It opens to a covered paver patio with a fire-pit area and a flat, fenced backyard that backs to trees.

✅ 5 bedrooms, 4 baths with a main-level bedroom + full bath

✅ A walk-out basement ready to finish exactly how you want it

✅ A gourmet kitchen with a butler’s pantry and beverage cooler

✅ A private main-level office behind glass French doors

✅ A fenced backyard backing to trees with a covered patio

✅ Sought-after schools plus a community pool, clubhouse, playground, and walking trails

✅ Minutes to both Ballantyne and Fort Mill

📍Indian Land, SC

One thing a lot of people don't realize about Charlotte...

The city is growing because it offers something for almost everyone.

Some people move here for the jobs.

Some move for the weather.

Others come because they want more space, lower property taxes, or a different pace of life.

And once they're here, they usually discover there's even more to love.

You can spend a Saturday exploring the city, trying a new restaurant, catching a game, or walking around one of Charlotte's neighborhoods.

Then spend Sunday out on Lake Norman, golfing year-round, hiking a greenway, or taking a day trip to the mountains.

That's what makes Charlotte so appealing.

You don't have to choose between city life and an outdoor lifestyle.

You can have both.

Of course, with that growth comes some growing pains.

Traffic can be frustrating.

Road infrastructure is still trying to catch up.

And yes, you'll hear plenty of locals joke that "we're full."

But the reality is people continue moving here because the lifestyle is hard to replicate.

Mild winters.

Long patio seasons.

A strong job market.

Direct flights almost anywhere.

Lake Norman in your backyard.

And suburbs that all offer something a little different depending on the lifestyle you're after.

There's a reason Charlotte ranked #1 in the country for population growth.

For a lot of people, it simply checks a lot of boxes.

If you didn’t grow up here, this list will make way too much sense…

1️⃣ Roads under construction for years with zero visible progress

2️⃣ A new apartment complex going up on every single corner

3️⃣ Schools closing for a “wintry mix” that’s really just a light frost on the grass

4️⃣ The I-77 express lane charging you $2 to get on and $19 to get off 20 minutes later

5️⃣ Turn signals being treated as a suggestion, not a rule

6️⃣ Going from freezing in the morning to needing the AC on by 2pm...same day

7️⃣ An HOA with 40 rules about your trash can but somehow no sidewalks

8️⃣ Stepping outside in July and feeling like you walked into a sauna

9️⃣ Pollen turning every car yellow every spring. It’s thick enough to write your name in it on the windshield

I moved here from PA and had no idea any of this was coming...but 6 years later I wouldn’t trade it. The good stuff outweighs all of it, by a lot.

Comment DALLAS for the listing details.

This is one of those homes that checks boxes that are usually hard to find together.

A full renovation, done right.

Nearly 3/4 of an acre.

Single-level living, no stairs.

And still under $420K.

You get the space and privacy of a big lot, without giving up a renovation that’s already done for you.

The kitchen is where the renovation really shows. Vaulted ceilings, skylights pulling light in all day, new countertops, refreshed cabinetry, and an island with plenty of room to gather.

The living and dining area flow right off it under those same vaulted ceilings, open and easy.

All 4 bedrooms are positioned for easy bathroom access, with generous walk-in closets in the primary and one more.

Off the hall, a flexible bonus room works as a home office, a walk-in pantry, or whatever this season of life calls for.

But honestly, the outdoor living is what really stands out. A covered patio steps down to a second gravel patio with room for a fire feature, all shaded by mature trees on a level, private lot.

And the big stuff is already handled: new HVAC in 2025, a new roof in 2020, and new windows throughout.

This is for the people who say…

“I want affordable city living with walkable access to everything”

Because finding a place in Charlotte that actually checks all of these boxes 👇

✔️ Walkable to Uptown
✔️ Steps from Fourth Ward Park + greenways
✔️ Near the best restaurants, coffee shops, and bars
✔️ Real character (hello, historic Fourth Ward)
✔️ Secure building + your own covered parking
✔️ And still under $280k

…that’s not easy.

But this one does it.

The best part?

A private covered balcony over the treetops with a leafy, tree-lined view you do NOT expect this close to the city center.

$279,000
1 bed | 1 bath | 766 sq ft | Churchill Condo

Located in Historic Fourth Ward…the heart of Uptown Charlotte

Inside: wood floors, a fireplace, an open layout, and a wall of sliding glass doors that pours in the light. The kitchen has granite counters, stainless appliances, and a pantry. Plus in-unit laundry and a deeded covered parking spot in the secure garage.

You’re minutes to the city, walking distance to the greenway, Panthers games, and some of Charlotte’s best local spots.

This is the kind of location people move here for.

If this is your vibe, this is exactly the type of opportunity you want to be ready for.

Comment POPLAR and I’ll send you all the details.

When I moved to Charlotte, I didn’t think I’d be able to take weekend beach trips this easily.

Charlotte’s inland, so I figured the beach would turn into a once-in-a-while, big-planning kind of trip.

Turns out it’s the opposite. The coast is an easy drive from here, and you’re not stuck with just one option. You get your pick, each with its own vibe:

✅ Charleston & Folly Beach, SC (about 3.5 hrs). Historic charm meets laid-back beach days.

✅ Isle of Palms / Sullivan’s Island (about 3.5 hrs). Just north of Charleston, quieter and a little upscale.

✅ Myrtle Beach, SC (about 3.5 to 4 hrs). The easy classic: attractions, golf, and nightlife.

✅ Wilmington & Wrightsville Beach, NC (about 3.5 to 4 hrs). A vibrant riverfront with wide, sandy beaches.

✅ Ocean Isle, Holden & Oak Island, NC (about 4 hrs). Laid-back and family-friendly when you want a slower pace.

✅ Kiawah Island, SC (about 4.5 hrs). Pristine beaches and world-class golf.

✅ Hilton Head Island, SC (about 4.5 hrs). Biking trails, golf, and easy family beaches.

This is the part of living here I don’t take for granted. Lakes in your backyard, mountains a couple hours one way, and the ocean an easy drive the other. You really do get the best of both worlds.

If you’ve been thinking about the move and want help figuring out which area fits your lifestyle, comment “CHARLOTTE BOUND” and I’ll send you my full guide. by @clthomeswithgrace
