POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week in honor of public work week I had a very timely tour of the Recology facility where residents of SeaTac have their solid waste collected, separated, and most importantly repurposed. This steadies my commitment to ensuring we are being thoughtful and proactive with our waste. Our region looks the way it does because we’ve been leading in environmental mitigation from the start. We are far from where we need to be but it is so exciting to meet the folks who are on the ground doing this day in and day out.

Last week, the council also recognized National Public Works Week. The most important work happens right here at home. Our staff in our Public Works division are some of the most creative, passionate, and activated folks I have met. From community engagement efforts to every pot hole filled, they are the often invisible and under appreciated thread that holds us together!

Happy Women’s History Month!

This March, we reflect on the many women who have helped shape the SeaTac and Highline communities we know today. There are so so many!

From educators and social workers to labor leaders, public servants, and community advocates, women in our region have played a generational role in building stronger neighborhoods, expanding opportunity, and standing up for the wellbeing of our communities.

From the very beginning of our city, women have stepped forward to lead, organize, and build the community we share today. Over the years, SeaTac has seen many important “firsts” for women in local leadership. These milestones reflect both the strength of the women serving our city and the diversity of the people who call SeaTac home.

Women here lead in many roles at once: as councilmembers and deputy mayors, as mothers and mentors, as organizers, advocates, and professionals committed to lifting up their communities. Their leadership helps guide SeaTac through growth, change, and new opportunities.

These milestones matter. They remind us that progress happens because women in every generation step forward to serve, to advocate, and to lead.

This month, let’s celebrate the many women whose work continues to shape SeaTac and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Tonight I had the pleasure to celebrate with the @highlineheritagemuseum in unveiling a new exhibit to honor the work of Bruce Bickford - a longtime SeaTac resident.

Most known for his claymation, he created this model of the fictional city of Twin Peaks. Pictured in the first photo is a building that was modeled by the real Riverton Sanatorium, an old building along the Tukwila and SeaTac border. Its now Olympic Heritage Behavioral Heath!

Tonight was a fascinating reminder how much art and culture lives within our cities and neighborhoods. Join the museum from 12 noon to 5 PM February 28th for a full festival celebrating our city and the pop culture it has inspired!

At our 2/10/26 council meeting, council unanimously passed a moratorium that prohibits the federal government from developing new or expanding current detention centers within our city. Without hesitation I supported this moratorium because there is no room in our city for the type of unlawful activity the federal government continues to enact on human beings.

This same night, council deeply and critically evaluated the continued use of Flock cameras. I supported the continued restriction of the cameras, by directing our Chief of Police to immediately restrict access to only SeaTac Police.

This remains a regional effort, with many cities leading the way for continued push back against a federal agenda aimed at stripping away basic rights. by @cmcaitlinkonya

At our last Regular Council Meeting, we recognized February as Black History Month. With a powerful proclamation read by @cmjoevinson, we are reminded of the responsibility of doing what is right; not popular or not easy. That is important now more than ever.

This month is an opportunity for all of us to partake in listening to the stories of our black and brown neighbors and celebrate achievements and contribution of African Americans despite centuries of systemic racism. American history IS black history. It’s reclaiming narratives, honoring resilience, and challenging systems of oppression rooted in colonial and racial hierarchies.

And to my fellow whites, wherever you are on your journey, I encourage you to seek out shared and interconnected struggles as a way to reflect on the remnants of colonial dominance over our shared political, economic, and cultural institutions. When we can do this as a community, we emphasize the importance of storytelling, education, and representation as tools for liberation for all.

Please check the link in my bio for some Black History Month events around the area! Ill save them to my stories as I find more. by @cmcaitlinkonya

Honored to represent SeaTac at AWC City Action Days this past week. We pushed for the resources, policies, and partnerships our community deserves while connecting with cities across Washington that look nothing like us on the map, but share so much of our story.

Some of the topics I engaged in included:

-Airport-affected city priorities & revenue equity
-Regional transit funding and service reliability
-Affordable housing tools for small, high-impact cities
-Public safety and the impact of surveillance technology
-Infrastructure and capital projects funding for growing cities
-Legislative updates impacting cities (permitting, land use, fiscal flexibility)
-Data and technology modernization for city operations

All in 48 hours!! Which is why the only picture I got was our group photo courtesy of AWC and screenshot of a song that came on shuffle.

It was a powerful reminder that our work in SeaTac is part of something so much bigger. by @cmcaitlinkonya

Oh hi 👋

Welcome to my council-focused page where you can follow along on what I’ve been up to and what to look forward to for the next four years. I may be gen-z but please be patient as I wrestle with the world of online content.

Expressly, anything posted here does not reflect the position of the City of SeaTac. All views are my own and are intended for educational purposes only.

Thank you for joining me in this journey and I am grateful to serve the amazing, diverse, and largely underestimated city that is SeaTac 🛫
