October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀

Nearly every family in SeaTac has been touched by breast cancer in some way, whether it’s a mother, sister, daughter, friend, neighbor, or coworker. This month we honor those fighting today, celebrate the survivors among us, and remember the loved ones we’ve lost.

Early detection saves lives. If you’re due for a screening, please don’t put it off. Talk with your doctor about what’s right for you, and encourage the people you love to do the same. And remember, men can get breast cancer too.

This month I’ll be wearing pink to show support, and I hope you’ll join me. Wear it to work, to school, to the game, or around town, and share a photo in the comments. Let’s show our neighbors who are in the fight that SeaTac stands with them. 💗

Join us for the City Council’s first 2027-2028 budget workshop on Saturday, October 10 at SeaTac City Hall.

We’ll review the City’s revenue and spending, the budget by fund, and the General Fund forecast. This is where our priorities for the next two years start to take shape, and I want residents to be part of the conversation.

Budget workshops are open to the public.

Follow-up workshops are October 17 and October 24.

Your budget. Your voice. Hope to see you there.

We cut the ribbon on this in April and it is already one of my favorite spots in the city. 😍

🌲 8 acres of forest
🛝 New inclusive playground
🚻 Restrooms and a pavilion
🅿️ Parking for about 80 cars
🚶 Connects to the Des Moines Creek Trail

Heads up: the S. 200th access is closed for the SR 509 project, so come in off 18th Ave S.

Many of you have reached out with questions about the Public Safety Sales Tax measure, so I want to make sure you have the facts straight from the source.

On Tuesday, July 14th, your City Council voted 6-0 to place this measure on the November ballot. That vote does not create the tax. It puts the decision where it belongs, in your hands.

Swipe through for the basics: what the measure is, how the money would be split between SeaTac and King County, and what our city currently spends on police and fire services.

A few quick facts:
✔️ 0.1% sales tax, 10 cents on a $100 purchase
✔️ Vehicle purchases are exempt
✔️ Because SeaTac acted before the county, 85% of collections stay in SeaTac
✔️ Police and fire contracts currently total $34.3M, nearly half of our General Fund

I am not here to tell you how to vote.

My job is to make sure you have accurate information to make the decision that is right for you and your family.

If you have questions, drop them in the comments or reach out directly and I will do my best to get you answers.

Ballots arrive in October.

I’ve spent the last two Saturdays, reviewing the City’s proposed 2027-2028 budget with my colleagues, and I had the honor of serving as Mayor Pro Tem for the first half of Workshop #2.

Here’s where things stand:

💰 Our savings are healthy today. The City is projected to have about $48 million in General Fund savings at the end of 2028. Our policy requires us to keep about $24 million as a safety cushion, so we’re well above it.

📉 The long-term forecast is a warning. If nothing changes, costs grow faster than revenue, and savings dip below our safety cushion around 2032.

📝 Departments have asked for about $11.8 million in new requests, called Decision Cards. About $6.25 million would come from the General Fund, which pays for most day-to-day City services. If all of those were approved, we’d reach that warning point a year sooner. The rest comes from restricted funds that can only be used for specific purposes, like streets, stormwater and capital projects.

🔍 I’ve sent staff more than 70 questions and requests, including follow-up on what the City committed to in the last budget, how parking enforcement is affecting our Municipal Court, and how the City protects data as it adopts new technology.

📅 Workshop #3 is next Saturday, October 24, 9 AM to 4 PM at City Hall. Council will go through each request one by one.

My focus is simple:

Does it serve SeaTac residents, and can we afford it over the long term, not just this year?

These are forecasts, not guarantees, and they depend on assumptions about future revenue.

I’ll keep asking the hard questions and sharing what I learn.

As a father of four, I cannot imagine what these families are carrying tonight. I am praying for the Silver Rail students, teachers and staff, for the first responders and educators who cared for those children, and for the entire Bend-La Pine Schools community.

SeaTac parents and caregivers, our kids may see or hear about this. Check in with them, listen, and remind them how loved they are.

Hold your loved ones close tonight.

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

SeaTac sits on the homelands of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Duwamish and Muckleshoot. They cared for this land long before any of us called it home, and they are still here today, as neighbors, leaders, and families in our community.

Today I’m honoring that history and the Native families who keep these traditions alive. If you have a few minutes, visit the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center or learn more about the Muckleshoot Tribe. Knowing the history of where we live makes us better neighbors.

Neighbors built their own bench at this bus stop. 🚏

This was my neighborhood when we moved to SeaTac 15 years ago and riders here still wait without sidewalks, shelters, or lighting.

Since 2024, I’ve pushed to move this project up in our Transportation Improvement Program, from 10th to 6th priority. But riders need help now.

This week I submitted a Council request for stop improvements and connected with @kcmetrobus and @cmsteffaniefain’s office. More to come.

Would you know what to do if someone was bleeding in front of you?

Thank you to @kingcountyrgv for bringing a free Stop the Bleed training right here to SeaTac City Hall. In one hour, we learned how to recognize life-threatening bleeding, apply pressure, pack a wound, and use a tourniquet.

In an emergency, the person who can help first is usually whoever is closest. That could be you.

Grateful for the partnership with the UW School of Medicine, the American College of Surgeons, and @cityofseatac.

👥 Tag someone who should take this training
