Today marks five years since I became the first — and hopefully not the last — Board Chair of the Africa America Institute.
AAI is the bridge I didn’t know I desperately needed. The Atlantic slave trade didn’t just disrupt a people — it severed a relationship, one whose costs are still being paid on one side of the water even as others built wealth from the very rupture.
Every day, I work to help heal that breach — the version of it that shows up as economic trauma, disconnection, and opportunity denied. I do it by focusing on the American South, because the South is where so much of that story began, and where I believe the next chapter of repair gets written.
This is the thread that runs through everything I build. I don’t see the American South and the African diaspora as two different portfolios — I see them as one continuous story of underrecognized opportunity. AAI is where I learned to see it that way.
Five years in, I’m still building the bridge. Grateful for the institution that taught me how — and even more committed to making sure I’m not the last. Swipe to get a glimpse into my journey home. 💫💫💫 by @cmonayj

This weekend we kick off our third AGAPE gathering 🤍 Still amazed at how quickly this vision became reality. So grateful for national partners who believe in the mission and show up fully. Thank you @lbjnola for your incredible support and for helping us tell the story.

The South raised me on lessons I’m still unpacking. This November, we’re bringing that gratitude home to Mississippi for Soul Bowl weekend. Legacy on the Yard is coming. More soon. by @cmonayj

If I’m honest, this week was a bit much.

Moving capital to and through the South is tough — but not impossible. One thing about entrepreneurship: it will cost you. Some days far more than I imagined. After nearly two decades, it has added up in more ways than one.

But right when I almost quit, out of nowhere, some good news came. And I felt compelled to keep going.

Sometimes the win isn’t the yes.

Sometimes the win is that you didn’t quit.

Looking forward to spending this weekend with people who love me. Rest is part of the work too. Circa 2023 in my happy place-Ghana. by @cmonayj

Deep in my calendar all year — especially this year, trying to connect the South, Africa, and Martha’s Vineyard — a deck, a proposal, a familiar room. Then I turn a corner in Midtown and the world is just there. Flags I don’t recognize. Languages layered at the next table over.

It’s easy to let the familiar do the thinking. UNGA week won’t let me.

The South I come from. The Africa my ancestors came from. The business of New York this week. Not separate stories — one story, made visible for a few days.

I just have to remember to keep seeing it once this week is over. Grateful for these memories over the past years. #globalcitizen #blessedlife #gratefulheart❤️ by @cmonayj

There was an inkling before there were words for it.

I’d spent a significant amount of time away from the South — building, learning, becoming. And somewhere in that distance, something unexpected happened: I fell in love with it even more.

It wasn’t just the simplicity of home. It was a pull I couldn’t fully name at first — toward the place my ancestors first touched American soil. A pull toward origin.

I think we call these inklings small because we’ve been taught not to trust what we can’t yet explain. But I’ve come to believe they’re not small at all. They’re often the truest data we have.
As entrepreneurs, we’re taught to look outward — at markets, at trends, at what’s next. And that matters. But I’m learning that some of the most important direction comes from going inside. From paying attention to the pull before you can justify it. From trusting the inkling before the plan catches up.
Home called me back. And everything I’m building now is downstream of that decision.

What inkling have you been ignoring? #entrepreneur by @cmonayj

Summer 2026 taught me a lot just when I thought so many chapters were closed. 💫
Gratitude…my life is a MIRACLE!

My favorite book and compass ❤️

A day one of one!

Joy! 💫

New Orleans is magical!🏁

The war room!

The reason why…

Legacy personified and building!

She’s here and we are happy!👶🏾

Relationships matter and how you treat people always matter.

Mosaic on the Vineyard 2026 is complete, and we're leaving Martha's Vineyard more convinced than ever that this community is exactly who we need to build the future we deserve. Thank you. #MosaicGenius #TheLegacyWeGrowTogether #TheNewSouth by @cmonayj

There’s something full circle about it. We met building something new once before, and here we are again, still believers in the same thing: you don’t wait for the way to be made for you. You create it.

This came right on the heels of my annual gathering on Martha’s Vineyard — which just hit a record 200 attendees this year. 🌊 Thanks @jadefloyddc 😜And honestly? We’re only getting started. It’s now growing into something more intentional: Mosaic on the Vineyard 2.0.

Legacy isn’t something you inherit and just carry. It’s something you keep building, with the people who’ve been building alongside you the whole time.

Grateful for the ones who remember where you started — and still show up for where you’re going.

People ask me all the time: how do you get so much done?
Here’s my honest answer — when you don’t have a choice, you keep pushing. 💪🏾
It’s not a system. It’s not some perfect morning routine. It’s knowing too many people are counting on the work to ever really put it down.
Not always sustainable. But sometimes exactly what the moment calls for — which is exactly the spirit we’re bringing into this year’s Mosaic on the Vineyard. We’re expanding the table, and I’m so happy to welcome my friend @lbjnola to guide us through the summit.

The wealth gap we work to close in the South has a twin — across the ocean, in the diaspora.
That’s why Africa is part of the conversation at our gathering on Martha’s Vineyard this year, and why it’s not stopping there. 🌍
Through Mosaic Africa, we’re building the bridge on purpose — connecting the investors, entrepreneurs, and changemakers already in our community to the opportunity waiting on the continent.
Same call to service. Just traveling a little further.
More coming soon on Mosaic Africa 2027 — you’ll be the first to know. 👣. Check out my article on Substack. Link in bio.
