Throwback! 7 Years ago! “Building a business aligned with my values. Sustainable. Intentional. Community-centered. 🌿”

Seven years ago, my first visit to Martha’s Vineyard opened my eyes to a beautiful world of creativity, philanthropy, community, and possibility.

I came home inspired to build differently. To create with more of a purpose. To give back. To honor community. And to make sustainability a bigger part of my story. 🪡 🧵 ♻️

Seven years later, I’m simply grateful for what that first visit planted in me. 💛 #thankyou @cmonayj @erikaalexanderthegreat * Look at my black hair 👀 😳🩷 #survivor

Before I understood the words "social entrepreneur," I understood Mrs. Emma's beauty shop chair.

She built an economy — trust, credit extended on faith, and the quiet understanding that whatever she built had to outlast her. This video is about what she taught me, long before I had language for it.

I write more about her — and about legacy, community, and the economics we don't always name — on Substack. Come sit with me over there cmonayj.

Congratulations to my husband, Aulston on being honored last night as a Junior Achievement Hall of Fame Laureate for his leadership and service as President and CEO of St. Augustine High School.

I’m grateful to see his unwavering commitment to students, both inside and outside the school’s walls, recognized and celebrated. It was especially meaningful to share the evening with him and to have so many of his closest friends travel in from New York to celebrate this well-deserved honor.

Congratulations as well to the other honorees, including Ronnie Burns Sr., whose presence has been a special part of Aulston’s life and who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Todd Graves and Raising Cane’s, recipients of the Business of the Year Award.

A beautiful evening celebrating leadership, service, impact, and the people who make our communities stronger. ❤️

Attending #lwd was a profoundly impactful and therapeutic respite. This summit exemplified the power of women coming together with intention and purpose. I was inspired by the women I met, who are driving change in the arts, philanthropy, policy, and capital. My outfit, designed by the talented @christiebrowngh, was a highlight of my own ghanaian ancestry - a stunning piece that honored heritage and craft. What struck me most, though, was the sense of sisterhood that permeated every moment. Pure joy, shenanigans, and more... We don't just occupy spaces - we redefine them. Weeks later, my cup is still full. #HowWeLead ⸻

What does it take to be a lifelong learner when the new information just keeps coming?
I’m still working on my answer.
But I keep finding it here. In community.
Community is medicine. It’s also wisdom.
This week at the Skoll World Forum, I had the privilege of moderating a conversation on Innovative Funding Approaches for Sustainable Impact — alongside brilliant solution builders Angela Nyambura Gichaga, Nicola Galombik, and Kieron Boyle.
And the gift? Learning more than I knew before and seeing that what I hoped to communicate actually landed.
That’s community as teacher — as well as medicine. I believe that is what is true for all of us - community can teach, strengthen and heal us if we allow it.
Now is the time to ignore distractions and take big swings. Even while reeling from the pace and volume of change — understanding and changing how money moves is one part of building the world we want. What big swing is calling your name? We got this.

This weekend we kick off our third AGAPE gathering 🤍 Still amazed at how quickly this vision became reality. So grateful for national partners who believe in the mission and show up fully. Thank you @lbjnola for your incredible support and for helping us tell the story.

Building something that lasts - it starts with people, trusted relationships, and shared values. AGAPE is rooted in this idea. As we head to New Orleans, I'm reminded that the most impactful spaces are built with purpose. There's significant progress happening across the South, but what matters is our actions. In many African cultures, agape represents communal care and responsibility, and AGAPE aims to unite leaders who share this vision. I'm looking forward to meaningful conversations with innovators and the chance to create something lasting in New Orleans and our Greenville, MS office. Registration closes Friday- send me a direct message if you want to join. Let's get started. #arkansas #texas #tennessee #mississippi #louisiana #georgia
