If you've been here a while, you've probably seen some version of this post before.

I've shared these images or some version of these projects often. Partly because I'm proud of them, partly because for the last three years, there wasn't much new to share.

Life got very full, and then very hard, and making work quietly stopped being something I had access to.

I'm trying to change that now, slowly, intentionally, and with a lot of unlearning and re-learning to do.

So if you're new: welcome, glad you found your way here.

And if you've been here a while: thank you for staying.

Letters from the studio is back 💌

After a long quiet spell, my newsletter is up and running again. One letter a month landing in your email inbox, written to a friend.

Inside includes what’s on my easel (and what’s falling apart on it), thoughts throughout the month, a recipe or two, some witchy bits, first word on new work and shop drops, and a small free download with every issue. This month it’s a printable digital postcard.

Subscribers also get the occasional discount code I don’t share anywhere else.

If you like the slower, behind-the-scenes side of things more than the grid, this is where it lives.

Some news I’m still letting sink in: I’ve been awarded Developing Your Creative Practice funding from Arts Council England @aceagrams 🤍

This year I bet on myself and my art practice. To have them bet on me too, in the same year, feels like a sign that I didn’t make the wrong choice.

I’ve been slowly building and cataloguing the Tang Family Archive @thetangfamily.archive over the last 10 months, as a way of holding on to my mum, my grandparents, and a city I no longer recognise. It contains over 7,000 photographs, letters, documents and tapes, and until now has lived between my aunt and me, while my partner David peers over my shoulder.

Over the next year, this grant gives me the time to move beyond painting and find forms that can carry it: clay, oral history and interactive digital storytelling, alongside research into the Shan Hai Jing, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hong Kong urban legends. It might look like four new things, but it’s really one question: how to hold my family’s memory in forms that outlast me, and that others can walk into.

Thank you to everyone who held me up to get here. Thank you especially to Daphne @daphneking_afa for your letter of support and all the opportunities and support over the years 🤍

More to come. 🤍

人月兩團圓, 中秋快樂。🥮
Happy Mid-Autumn, friends 🤍

It’s Mid-Autumn today but all I can think about is how this was the last holiday I spent with my mum before she left this earth.

Hold your loved ones tighter and if you’re apart, I hope that we’re all still looking at the same moon together 🤍🥮 by @cmuins

Late to the trend 😂

The honest answer is that I don’t have a short one. My practice sits between illustration and fine art — devotional painting, folk art and decorative arts treated as equals, not influences, but all asking: how do we carry cultural memory, micro histories, and grief?

Some months that’s a deck of tarot cards. Some months it’s cataloguing my family photographs and sketching them. Sometimes, I’m just discovering a folk tale from Hong Kong & Ireland.

Scatterings from the Studio 005

Very productive week — filled with painting, meeting up with friends, family time, and catching exhibitions

EE and I went to see Practical Magic 2, after months of not being able to watch Practical Magic after mum’s passing. The original was our movie, one that made our family relationships visible. While the second did not have the same whimsy nor did it get as dark as the first one, it was carthartic as we cried throughout the movie at how it touched on grief, sisterhood, and mother-daughter relationships.

We finally rewatched the first movie the night after our cinema trip.

My blood, your blood, our blood. 🩸

Gorgeous pieces by Arty Nicharee @artynicharee from Kawan Kawan!, an exhibition by Shoes Off @weareshoesoff

There were many pieces that beautifully interrogated the diasporic experience and colonial histories, while still holding space for connection.

Congrats again, @plengjirathiyut 🤍

Diego y Frida 1929-1944

Wedding anniversary gift from Frida Kahlo complete with painted shell frame that is so similar in visual language to devotional altars.

Girl with Death Mask (1938) by Frida Kahlo

Those who’ve known me, know of my high school - early uni years obsession with Frida Kahlo (made a mini solo of paintings inspired by Frida in 2016). But I’ve never seen her work in person. While the show at Tate was not focused on her work and her life, but more on her contemporaries and her legacy, it was nonetheless a joy to finally see these works I’ve admired for so long.

Sadly didn’t have time to see the Ana Mendieta show this week, but going soon 😀

Beautiful pottery by @amandatongceramics — so glad I managed to make it for the showcase and the artist sharing! These pieces from Amanda’s series, Mono no Aware, that utilises foraged leaves, plants, and farmed vegetables brings the art of clay and ceramics back to its roots and I loved her philosophy of creating balance, of conversing with n taken in London, United Kingdom by @cmuins

In 2019, I began a series call Exhaustion, the anticipatory precursor to everything that followed as a caregiver, as an artist, as someone trying to survive. Exhaustion is not failure. It is the proof of a life fully lived and fully loved.

This is the latest piece to join it. I began the sketch and made the underpainting during the month mum was recovering from surgery, when the doctors told us that she was tumour free and we thought we had won the battle. I picked it up again this week to finish it, while listening to Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey.

10/09/2026 - 4 years since 婆婆 left the physical realm, and 10 months since mum left as well. 公公’s been gone for over 12 years. I will not leave my still open wounds here on my public account, but know that I miss you each and every day.

Featuring some of my favourite photographs of Grandma from the Tang Family Archive.

Chiu Chow Chilli Oil was never just a condiment in my family. It was the jar that appeared at every table, spooned over noodles, dumplings, fish, and whatever needed waking up. So when Lee Kum Kee put out an open call to redesign the label, I wanted to paint that feeling: an ingredient so alive it looks back at you.

The three heroes of the oil — chillies, garlic and soybeans — became characters in a lush, tangled garden. Every chilli and garlic bulb carries a watchful, heavy-lashed eye, a motif I keep returning to from talismans and folk imagery, on the idea that food made with care watches over the people it feeds. Cross-sections of chillies bloom like flowers, soybeans drift like seeds along the vine, and the hand-drawn sparkles are that first electric hit of heat on the tongue.

It didn’t get shortlisted into the top 10. I think I know why, and it’s fair: the title runs at an angle across the busiest part of the painting, and at actual jar size, it would be the last thing you read rather than the first. Packaging has a hierarchy of its own and I came at it as an illustrator. Useful thing to have learnt.

Posting it anyway. It’s playful, surreal, and a love letter to flavours I grew up with, which is what I wanted from it whether or not it ever reaches a shelf. 🌶️ by @cmuins

The Coffin ⚰️

It’s an ending you didn’t choose and it doesn’t pretend that everything’s fine while it’s happening. My version of the card sits underground with roots and bugs and fossils around it, a hint at how much time the pain will take before it mulches into compost and feeds something.

Swipe to slide 5 for every symbol I put in the card and why.

Thanks @suskihanna for suggesting the coffin! 🫶

Scatterings from the Studio 004

Decided I don’t really like raw cheese as much as I thought and prefer the grapes and fig in comparison (David: you’re lactose intolerant anyway)

Submitted to various open calls this week! Trying to get over my fear of rejection 🤡

Finally met up with @celtiadi and had a very lovely night and now craving a bit more socialising with friends — it’s taken me 10 months of dipping my toes in and out of the water but I think this is it! Until mum’s anniversary hits and I know I will be curled up into a ball in my room again (please do not knock on my door in November).

Working on the second piece of a series of four which I had sketched out in early January but I have a feeling I will not fully explain what they are or show them until next January 😀

Finished with repackaging photos of grandparents + ancestors + anything before the 90’s and we’re onto EE’s photos! Ft EE with Andy Lau (there’s a small box of the twins and a lot of Andy Lau memorabilia coming up)
