Life lesson: Don’t plan a romantic vacation in a last ditch effort to save your relationship. I don’t know why I thought a perfect itinerary might rekindle something, but reality hit when my boyfriend said “You did this for Instagram, right?” He thought the sunset tiki dinners and honeymoon-grade hotels were for social media clout.

I stopped posting in the grid to prove I didn’t care about Likes and Followers… and it just carried on for 6 years. I still took photos to capture the joy I felt, to remember moments of beautiful scenery and food with people I cared about, but I didn’t feel compelled to curate the grid.

The permanence became too much for a perfectionist like me. I didn’t want to lose hours of my vacation to photo editing or worry about timely posts, I didn’t want to deal with rude comments from randos. I liked how Stories disappeared in 24 hours so I didn’t need to overthink it and switched to those.

I’ve been told that it looks like I miss my ex and no, I don’t miss those years of wondering why I couldn’t make someone happy, but there were some good times. It’s all a part of who I am today: why I know so much about Greek food or how to cook a Friendsgiving for 20, why I know how to tie a Tiffany ribbon around presents (so I could finally get the Hallmark-perfect Christmas tree I’d wanted since I was a kid).

It wasn’t just for Instagram: it genuinely brings me joy to look back on the things I made, the places I’ve been, and the food I ate. by @cmyung

How do you win the heart of @baletsa? You take him to a Japanese #culinary wonderland known as @waikikiyokocho and present him with #authentic Jiro style #ramen at @ramen_bario! 🍜 Hearty noodles, rich #tonkatsu broth unctuous with pork fat, slices of char siu, finished with a perfect soy egg. 😍 I should’ve waited until after the bikini photos were taken to eat this, but it was too good!

The best thing to eat after a 10-hr flight: #shaveice from @uncleclays! 🌈

Classic Rainbow with strawberry, mango, pineapple syrups and Tahitian vanilla ice cream. They use real fruit for the syrup and it is #onolicious. 🤙🏽
(And I know this may be controversial but I think ice cream on top is superior to ice cream on bottom)

One heck of an ocean view 🏝 Mahalo @royal_hawaiian for this amazing room!

Did You Know? In the 1920s, tourists had to take a steamship to Hawaii, spending 7 days at sea each way. The last thing they wanted to see upon arrival was more ocean - so for many years, the Royal Hawaiian’s prized rooms were actually the ones facing the gardens.

We aren’t morning people, but we booked a 5:30am flight so that we’d get to Honolulu by 3pm. Thanks to jet lag, I’d continue to keep waking up around 5:30am for the first week. Not a bad thing - it helped us beat the crowds! taken in Boston Logan International Airport by @cmyung
