Happy 15th Anniversary, Doshia Woods! ❤️

As Darius Rucker sang to us on our wedding day 😁

“This could be one of those memories
We wanna hold on to, cling to
The one we can’t forget
Baby, this could be our last first kiss
The door to forever
What if this was that moment
That chance worth takin’
History in the makin’”

Who knew 15 years ago would lead to all of this? Cheers to a lifetime of memories with you. by @coach_dubs

As one of my former players said when she called today “Won”t He”. I am so excited to start this new chapter as the head women’s basketball coach at Owens Community College. Patience and timing.

Great school, incredible facilities, program tradition, and a community. Ready to get to work. 🚂🚂🚂

Had a wonderful weekend at home visiting family and friends. My dad brought this painting up from his basement to give to me. This was a painting that my mom asked me to paint years ago. It hung on their wall in their living room and every time I would come for a visit she would remind me I painted that just for her and that she loved the clouds and the water in it. Dad gifted it back to my for our place in Toledo. A little piece of a connection of mom and myself. I think it is a little reminder that just above the clouds she is still with me and proud of me. by @coach_dubs

Last week I decided I wanted to clear my mind from clutter and get creative with two blank canvases and some wood. In doing so some thoughts came to mind that I wanted to share.

We often talk about our careers and our lives in terms of “chapters.” But sometimes, that metaphor feels a bit static—as if the story is already written, and we are just turning the page.

I prefer the idea of the Blank Canvas.

In every season of life, we are painting a picture. We mix our colors, we choose our strokes, and we build a composition that represents who we are and what we value at that moment. But there inevitably comes a time when the canvas is full, the paint is dry, and the picture no longer reflects the artist we’ve become.

The hardest part of any transition isn’t starting the next thing—it’s admitting that the current painting is finished.

We often fear that putting down the brush means losing the progress we’ve made. But the truth is, the end of one season isn’t a failure; it’s an invitation to clean the palette.

Whether you are transitioning between industries, moving into a new leadership role, or choosing a completely different life path, the “in-between” space is where the real work happens.

When you pick up a new brush to face a fresh canvas, remember three things:

1. You aren’t starting from scratch; you’re starting from experience. You carry every color you’ve ever mixed with you. The lessons from your past seasons are the foundation for the masterpiece you are about to create.
2. The blank space is a gift, not a void. It is the ultimate expression of creative freedom. It is the moment where your intuition, your refined skills, and your updated perspective finally have room to breathe.
3. Pace yourself. Great art is rarely created in a single sitting. Give yourself the grace to experiment, to make mistakes, and to let the composition emerge naturally.

We are all either finishing a painting or starting a new one.
How do you know when it’s time to set down the brush and pick up a blank canvas?

I’d love to hear how you navigate these transitions.

Hope everyone reading this crushes their week! I’m approaching mine with a pep in my step.

After months of praying, “Show me a sign that You are with me,” it finally clicked: God is always there, I just needed to hear Him through the people around me. 🤍
I’ve been so focused on “what’s next” that I forgot to appreciate “what’s here right now.” My mind and body needed a break I didn’t even realize I was craving. I spent last week catching up with mentors, coaches, and friends, and their advice changed everything for me:
✨ It’s okay to just breathe. After 24 years of laser focus, it’s okay to recreate yourself at your own pace. You don’t need an immediate answer.
✨ Find your joy outside of work. Don’t let a job completely define you. Leave room for the things that feed your soul—music, art, fellowship, cooking.
✨ Get creative with your passion. If you are a coach/leader at heart, a change in circumstances doesn’t change who you are. You just get creative in the interim until the right fit finds you.
✨ Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are people who want to see you win and will help you think outside the box.

If you just stop, listen, and believe, you’ll realize there is something truly great in store for you, too. Let’s get it!

If you know me you know this isn’t normal. Me, by myself, doing the most random things. I am social. I like company.

Being in Denver by myself the last few weeks has sucked. I miss my #1. I hope you are proud of me Doshia!! 😂😂😂

Garden of the God. Top Golf. Camp Bow Wow carpool. Photo shoot with the Twins.

I can’t wait to get Toledo for our next journey. But until then…..no wasted days. by @coach_dubs

One year ago today Doshia and I were sitting at Lucky Strike watching the Duke men’s basketball match madness game when I got the call that said to get in my knees and start praying for my Mom.

I cannot believe it has been a year since she left us. I miss her so much every day. Little did I know how much my life would change.

I know I have an angel. And she shows up when I am least expecting it. I talk to her and I believe she hears me. Because of my mom I have enjoyed life so much more this last year even with all the tears I have cried.

I smile more at things I used to think were minimal. I am more patient and intentional with others and my time. I allow those in my life that want to be there. I have forgiven, oh have I forgiven situations and people. I have said multiple times that this isn’t the hardest thing I have encountered this year when times were tough and moved forward. I have listened more when friends/family need an ear. I have prayed a lot more. And I have loved harder than I ever have before.

I miss her phone calls. I miss her advice. I miss her hugs. I miss her laughter. And I miss her unconditional love.

Mom you are with me and I love you. Today is your day! 🪽❤️‍🩹 by @coach_dubs

The two pictures I didn’t know I would need, feel so much emotion about, and cherish. A year ago today I went home to recruit. It’s such a rare thing that in the middle of the season as a college coach everything aligns to recruit players in season near your family.
I was home with my parents and it was a different visit because I was really with them the whole time. It wasn’t a trip where I tried to visit my friends it was a few hours I would have with mom and dad outside of games. It was about now as inwas heading to bed a year ago that I was wondering if the game I was to go to in Iowa was going to happen. There was a bad snow/ice storm coming in. It was not looking good.
The next morning I woke up and found out the game I was going to was going to be the following day. I couldn’t get to Denver and my other option was to meet the team i Omaha in a few days. So the smart thing was to stay at my parents place for another day. That day is picture #1. We were able to get to Krape Park to sit and have our McDonalds lunch and fountain drink (mom’s favorite) at one of her and my father’s favorite sites. It was different this time. I can’t explain it but we were all very much into the moment. We left there and went home to play cards. Mom and Dad watched film with me of our upcoming game. It was a perfect day! One that I missed out on the last 25 years because of “season” and giving everything to everyone except my two biggest fans. I will cherish that picture forever because I know exactly where we were in the car and “in the moment”. Laughing. And mom telling me stories of the place we were looking at. Picture #2 was the last day I saw my mom alive. It was our last photo together. I didn’t always take photos when I was home but I could hear Dosh in my head saying get a selfie. And I did. I hugged mom and dad. Told them I loved them. And at some point on the drive to Iowa mom called and we talked about our upcoming game. She told me everything was going to be alright. I will cherish this picture not because it is our last together, but because we were so happy that morning together. by @coach_dubs

There are friends and there are friends that become family! Much needed love and support last week from our New Orleans family. Thank you Lisa and Maria for always being there. The laughs, hugs, and words of wisdom are always special to us. And of course the King Cake topped it off ❤️❤️❤️
