4 weeks. Three numbers moved. Pull-ups: 10 → 15 Trap-bar deadlift: 325×3 → 365×3 10-yard dash: 1.56 → 1.51 And now, Alex is a finalist for Receiver of the Year. As a wide receiver, he didn’t need more random work. He needed a plan that developed relative strength and force production while keeping acceleration the priority. We measured what mattered, built the block and retested. Effort matters. But effort without direction is still guessing. I was never the 5-star recruit. No offers. No shortcuts. Just belief. I walked on at Mizzou, earned captain, and proved that standards beat talent when talent doesn’t stay disciplined. That same mindset carried me through bodybuilding wins… and now into coaching hundreds of athletes — from youth to pros — to chase their own greatness. Because adversity isn’t the end of your story. It’s the start of your standard. ⚡️ If you’re an athlete ready to turn setbacks into strength 👉 DM “ELITE” and I’ll show you how to rise. 🎥: @phillipwillett #GetRecruited #AthleteMindset #CollegeAthlete #WalkOnMentality #PerformanceCoach #OvercomeAdversity #MizzouMade #TrainLikeAnAthlete #CoachStevens #DisciplineWins by @coach_stevens_
You’re putting in the work. You deserve to know whether it’s paying off. My online coaching starts with your goals and an assessment. From there, we build your program, review your execution and track what’s improving—so you know what to focus on and when to adjust. Build the evidence. DM EVIDENCE with your sport and goal, and we’ll talk through whether coaching fits. #athletedevelopment #speedtraining #athleticperformance by @coach_stevens_
It’s easy to keep training what you’re good at. Especially when that’s where your confidence comes from. For me, that was the weight room. At APEX, I pulled 420 for 22 reps. Then I ran a 7:41 mile. The lifts gave me something to feel good about. The mile gave me something to work on. What’s one thing you keep putting off in your training because you don’t feel good at it yet? #AthleteTraining #AthleticPerformance #athletedevelopment #StrengthAndConditioning #speedtraining by @coach_stevens_
Getting stronger doesn’t automatically make you faster. But that doesn’t mean strength isn’t important. Over 12 weeks, Kathryn improved three different performance qualities: Trap bar: 205 × 3 → 225 × 3 Vertical jump: 17.75″ → 21.4″ 10-yard dash: 1.81 → 1.75 Here’s why those results matter. Maximal strength contributes to an athlete’s ability to produce force. Jumping requires producing substantial impulse within a limited amount of time. Acceleration requires directing force into the ground effectively, repeatedly, while coordinating the entire movement. They’re related qualities, but they’re not interchangeable. That’s why I don’t treat the weight room as the entire performance program. Strength work develops force-producing capacity. Sprinting provides the specific exposure needed to develop acceleration. Jumps provide another opportunity to train explosive force production. The goal is to develop the qualities an athlete needs, then assess whether those improvements are showing up in performance. Kathryn improved across all three tests. That doesn’t tell us exactly how much each exercise contributed. But it does give us measurable evidence that her overall training was moving in the right direction. That’s the approach I take with the athletes I coach. If you’re serious about developing your athletic ability and want an individualized plan, DM me EVIDENCE Build the Evidence. #speedtraining #athletetraining #athletedevelopment #softball #softballtraining by @coach_stevens_
Max-velocity days have been humbling me. Strength has always given me confidence. But being strong in the lifts I’ve spent years chasing made it easy to overlook the areas I hadn’t developed. My calves and hip flexors have been a reality check. It’s uncomfortable feeling like a beginner at something when you’re used to feeling capable in the weight room. But that discomfort is giving me useful information about where my training needs attention. Today started with max-velocity sprinting, followed by trap bar at 405 for two sets of six, then accessory work for my hamstrings, hip flexors and calves. Strength still has a place. I’m controlling the main-lift volume to make room for the areas I’ve neglected and account for the sprint work I’ve already done. Now I’ll track how those areas progress, how I recover, and how the rest of my training performs. If your program keeps revolving around what you’re already good at, ask yourself what you might be avoiding. APEX Training — Vol. 2: Strength. Five hundredths of a second doesn’t sound like much until you put it in context. Alex improved his 10-yard dash from **1.56 to 1.51** in four weeks. That’s a **3.2% improvement in acceleration** and roughly **one foot of separation over 10 yards** when tested under the same conditions. For a receiver, that first 10 yards can determine whether a defender stays attached or Alex creates space. We didn’t choose random exercises and hope they transferred. Trap-bar deadlifts built his force capacity. Rebound and depth-to-broad jumps trained him to express and redirect it quickly. Sled starts and bounds applied it horizontally. Two-point starts showed whether it transferred without assistance. During the same four weeks: **10-yard:** 1.56 → 1.51 **Pull-ups:** 10 → 15 **Trap bar:** 325×3 → 365×3 He later became a Receiver of the Year finalist. The point isn’t to copy these exercises. The point is to identify what matters most and build the training around it. If you’re working hard but can’t name the priority behind your program, DM me **“EVIDENCE.”** 📸 gallery823 #WideReceiverTraining #FootballPerformance #AccelerationTraining #athletedevelopment by @coach_stevens_
Strength is the easiest quality for me to keep chasing because it’s already one of my strengths. The trap bar and bench press aren’t what held back my APEX score. My 4.615 forty and 7:41 mile made the gaps obvious. Strength stays in the program. It just stops driving it. Speed and conditioning become the priorities. Strength supports them. A good program doesn’t give everything equal attention. It gives the most attention to what is limiting the goal. If you’re training hard but don’t know your limiter, DM me “EVIDENCE.” #SpeedTraining #AthleteDevelopment #SportsPerformance #StrengthAndConditioning #performancetraining by @coach_stevens_
APEX showed me exactly where I stood. Now every session has a job. Today wasn’t about looking fast or finishing exhausted. It was about measuring max velocity: 30-yard build. 10-yard fly. Effort is part of the process. Evidence tells me whether that effort is moving me forward—or whether the plan needs to change. No guessing. Just test, train and retest. Road to APEX: Episode 1. IF ANOTHER ATHLETE’S WORKOUT MAKES YOUR PROGRAM FEEL INCOMPLETE… COMPARISON IS MAKING THE DECISION. #athletedevelopment #speedtraining #athletetraining A NEW EXERCISE CAN MAKE TRAINING FEEL MORE PRODUCTIVE. THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT WILL PRODUCE A BETTER ADAPTATION. ATHLETES ASK, “IS MY PROGRAM WORKING?” BEFORE ASKING, “DID I ACTUALLY WORK THE PROGRAM?” YOUR BODY DOESN’T ADAPT ON THE SAME TIMELINE AS YOUR ATTENTION SPAN. STOP RESTARTING THE PROCESS. IF YOU CAN’T NAME THE RESULT YOU’RE TRYING TO CHANGE… YOU CAN’T KNOW WHETHER THE CHANGE ACTUALLY WORKED. YOU CAN’T BLAME THE PROGRAM WHEN YOUR SLEEP, NUTRITION AND EXECUTION ARE INCONSISTENT. CONTROL THE INPUTS BEFORE JUDGING THE OUTCOME. AN EXERCISE ISN’T “GOOD” BECAUSE A GREAT ATHLETE USES IT. IT’S GOOD WHEN IT SOLVES YOUR SPECIFIC PROBLEM. CHANGE YOUR TRAINING BECAUSE THE EVIDENCE CHANGED— NOT BECAUSE YOUR CONFIDENCE DID. by @coach_stevens_
If someone is bigger, stronger or faster than you, it is easy to assume their training contains something yours is missing. But you are usually seeing one exercise, not the complete context behind it. You do not see: • The athlete’s training history • The qualities they already possess • The limitation they are trying to address • The phase of training they are currently in • The work that was removed to make room for it • How their progress is being measured An exercise can make complete sense for someone else and still have no place in your current program. When you repeatedly add exercises because they look impressive, or remove work because someone else is doing something different, you turn a structured program into a collection of reactions. You never follow one plan long enough to determine what is actually producing the result. Before I change my own training, I ask three questions: 1. What exact performance outcome am I trying to improve? 2. What evidence shows that my current program is not adequately addressing it? 3. What specific problem will this change solve, and how will I measure whether it worked? If you cannot answer those questions, the desire to change your program may be coming from comparison, not evidence. Effective training is not built by constantly collecting something new. It is built by making intentional decisions, executing them long enough to create an adaptation and measuring the response. Save this for the next time someone else’s workout makes your program feel incomplete. #athletedevelopment #speedtraining #athleticperformance by @coach_stevens_
Yesterday, I told you that you don’t need another Monday to start. But before you add more work, ask yourself what you’re hoping that work will prove. A lot of athletes don’t just want to improve. They want the starting position to prove they belong. The scholarship to prove the sacrifice was worth it. The PR to prove they’re strong. The difficult workout to prove they’re disciplined. That creates a dangerous relationship with performance. Every workout becomes a test of your identity. When the result is good, you feel validated. When the result is bad, you panic. You add unnecessary work, abandon the plan or start comparing yourself to athletes with completely different circumstances. That isn’t objective training. It’s an emotional reaction to feeling like you’re falling behind. Your results should answer questions: What improved? What failed to transfer? What is limiting performance? What needs to change next? You don’t need less ambition. You need enough confidence in who you are to look honestly at the evidence without treating it like a verdict. Use your results as information not validation. #athletedevelopment #speedtraining #athleticperformance by @coach_stevens_
