I can watch this 100 times an hour. I still remember my dad calling me in my college apartment crying with all the noise in the background. He just kept screaming “she did it! Vonetta won the gold!” . @vonettaflowers_the1st is more than my home town hero, she’s my hero. I grew up watching her on my dad’s track team as she ran with grit, smiled through every adversity and treated people with amazing kindness. I watched her every move. I wanted so bad to be a Mayes sister….lol. I was there when she won AAU, TAC and youth games titles (I’m showing my age). I would go to her practices with @tiffinrod at UAB. I was there when she just missed qualifying for NCAA’s in the heptathlon. I was at the 1996 Olympic trials when she didn’t make the final in the long jump…. But she never gave up. Olympics was her dream…and she found a way to not only become an Olympian, but to get a gold medal. She never gave up…never. Just a lil girl from Bessemer, Al like me. Her book Running on Ice is dedicated to my dad and it is so perfect. Sometimes I feel like I’m running…or coaching on ice. But I just think of Vonetta and pretend to be a Mayes sister and go for the gold….Ill get it one day 😊 Happy Black History Month #anchordown #doresopen #herstory by @coachsdaughtr
