If we had to define The Cocoa Bookclub, this is what we imagine would be in the dictionary!

What started as an opportunity for members to diversify their reading tastes and open themselves up to genres they had never tried has evolved into a safe space for a wonderful collective of like-minded and diverse individuals to share their love of books and form incredible friendships.

We know it’s way too early to be talking about December, but we think you can excuse us this time! 🤭

We are delighted to be collaborating with The New Adult Book Prize for a second time to read the 2026 Winner, which is The Merge by @gracerosewalker!

Last year, it was the deepest honour to read Disappoint Me by Nicola Dinan for our December 2025 meeting, and we cannot wait to see what our 2026 read will be.

If you’d like to attend our next meeting for The Cocoa Bookclub, visit @redlionbooks DM The Cocoa Bookclub or email us@redlionbooks.co.uk for more information.

The nights are closing in, Christmas is around the corner and it is time for us to announce our November 2026 read! Anyone who knows Louise, AKA our host, knows she loves Angela Carter and so it was only a matter of time before we did another book by her, this time with Nights at the Circus!

“To think I really fooled you!” She marveled, “It goes to show there’s nothing like confidence.”

Welcome to the circus – strange, dirty and shameless, this is the greatest show on Earth.

Sophie Fevvers, the ‘Cockney Venus’ who claims to have been hatched from an egg, is a seductress, a braggart and an ariel performer in Colonel Kearney’s circus. She is also part woman, part swan...or all fake? Courted by the Prince of Wales and painted by Toulouse-Lautrec, she is an aerialist extraordinaire and star of Colonel Kearney’s circus.

Jack Walser, an American journalist, is on a quest to discover the truth behind her identity. Dazzled by his love for her, and desperate for the scoop of a lifetime, Walser has no choice but to join the circus on its magical tour through turn-of-the-nineteenth-century London, St Petersburg and Siberia.

Published in 1984 and named one of the most influential books of all time by the BBC, Nights at the Circus is rich in symbolism and offers a unique critique of social norms at the turn of the 20th century.

Our August 2026 After Cocoa Recommendation for Practical Magic HAD to be the 1998 film of the same name staring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

While the movie is different from the book, it is still a wonderful watch, especially as the nights star drawing in and the leaves start to fall - its perfect to watch with a Midnight Margarita and chocolate cake (maybe you can even draw a pentagram in whipped cream on it...)

As September ends, so does our time reading Victorian Psycho! 💚🪓⚔️

What a wonderful month we all had reading Victorian Psycho, and what an equally wonderful discussion we had about Victorian literature, the gothic and Female Rage.

We certainly won’t forget you, Winifred Notty x

‘They will remember me’

Everyone in Cocoa is alight with passion for this wonderfully wild book, and we can’t wait to congregate so we can discuss Winfred Notty in person. She is certainly unforgettable!

Spooky Season is our time to shine with so many horror fans in our midst, and after much deliberation, we knew we had to read V.E. Schwab’s Gothic vampire novel, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, a twisting tale of power, immortality and the terrifying price of freedom.

This is a story about hunger. This is a story about love. This is a story about rage. This is a story about life— how it ends, and how it starts.

“Death comes, and sometimes it is kind, and often it is cruel, and very rarely it is welcome. But it comes, all the same.”

In 1532, María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.

Nearly 300 years later, a moment of forbidden intimacy sees Charlotte shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.

After a uncharacteristic one-night-stand, 21st century Alice is left her questioning her past, her present, and her future, throwing herself into the hunt for answers... and retribution.

Defying time and all odds, these women’s fates become tangled like roots

This is now Summer ends! ☀️✨🧋

Last Sunday is Cocoa day, and this meeting was incredibly fun as we got to chat and discuss Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman.

Alas no midnight margaritas but plenty of iced coffee and biscuits. We couldn’t think of a better way to close out our summer sessions as we look forward to entering our autumnal season with Victorian Psycho.

This snuggly, lazy yet sassy diva is Astrid! She belongs to Phoebe, who has been with Cocoa since our first year.

Like her owner, Astrid is a big fan of the dream harbour series by Laurie Gilmore. She’s currently reading the latest book in the series, the daisy chain flower shop - which is the perfect cosy summer read.

“My darling girl, when are you going to realise that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage.”

With how many Cocoa members LOVE the Practical Magic film, you can imagine how excited we all are to be diving into the book that inspired the movie.
