Love stages where it’s all about speed! by @code7tac

Spent the day doing some awesome private instruction on the pistol skills required in practical shooting competition.

We worked through the draw, grip, trigger control, recoil management, doubles, target transitions, movement, shooting at distance, and attack versus control targets

We also spent time on the competition side of things—hit factor scoring, stage planning, how to walk a stage, and how to identify the most efficient way to shoot it.

At the end of the day I set up a few short mock USPSA stages so they could put everything together and work through the full process from stage walk to execution.

They made measurable improvement across the board throughout the day. Good group, good training, and a solid day on the range! taken in Windrock Shooting Range & Training Center by @code7tac

Never a bad day on the range. Need to work on much more efficiency in movement and overall had way too many mikes! 8th overall, 3rd in Carry Optics. taken in Middle Tennessee Sporting Association by @code7tac

You’re leaving time on the table during your transitions.

On the better run, I’m using the confirmation the shot actually requires, exiting the target on recoil, and driving the gun directly to the next target.

No unnecessary visual confirmation. No letting the gun settle back into a target I’m already finished with. No delay before starting the process of sending rounds towards the next target.

Same drill. Different results.

9.65 vs. 7.48

That’s 2.17 seconds found largely through better transitions.

This is the kind of thing we work on in class.

Good results from this match — an M-level run and a GM-level run on the classifiers.

Happy with the progress, but there’s always something to clean up.

On to the next one. by @code7tac

How do I build a consistent index?

How do I go faster?

How do I score better?

How can I be better prepared to carry a gun?

Reps.

Identify your shortcomings. Find—or develop—drills that isolate them. Put in purposeful reps, evaluate the results, make adjustments, and rep it out again.
There is no single drill, technique, or piece of gear that suddenly makes everything click.

Improvement comes from honestly identifying what is holding you back and doing the work required to fix it.

How it started vs. how it’s going.

Better than before. Always working to improve.

Another outstanding Red Dot Performance class in the books.

Today was all about building a repeatable index, maintaining constant connection to the pistol, and developing a durable grip that consistently delivers the dot where your eyes are already looking. By the end of the day, students were finding the dot faster, presenting more consistently, and transitioning between multiple targets with greater confidence and control.

We wrapped things up with a little competition practice to put those skills to work under a bit of pressure. Great work by everyone who came out and put in the reps.

Speed.

Students frequently ask how to go faster.

The answer isn’t trying to move faster. Speed is a byproduct of soonness and efficiency.

React to the stimulus sooner. Get your hand to the gun sooner. Establish your master grip sooner. Get your support hand to the gun sooner. Build your grip sooner. Drive the gun to a small, exact spot on the target sooner.

Do enough things sooner—and without wasted movement—and speed shows up on its own.

Speed is most people’s goal when they start shooting. But its true source is consistency. Consistent grip. Consistent index. Consistent visual focus. Be consistent, and speed becomes a byproduct.

Working on speed in transitions. The Tennessee heat was killer today and made even a relatively brief session brutal.

I think it’s important to run some standards during practice (draw to one shot, transitions, bill drill etc.). Most people brag about being able to do a particular skill in a particular time but what can you do when you’re not warmed up? When the weather isn’t cooperative? When the cards aren’t stacked in your favor? These show us where our real skill is and where we need to push from! by @code7tac
