19 months old and learning with her whole body. 🌿🤍

Our morning started with tiny hands scooping, pouring and transferring through our sensory garden… then things got a little messier.

She dug through the “mud” searching for hidden garden insects, rescued them one by one, gave them a good scrub with water, sponges and a toothbrush, and finished the morning creating a little flower painting alongside Mom.

To her, she was simply digging, splashing, squishing, pouring and painting.

But underneath all that play, we were building fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, sensory awareness, problem-solving, concentration, practical life skills and confidence.

And perhaps my favourite part — connection with Mom.❤️

At 19 months, learning doesn’t need to look like sitting at a table being taught. Sometimes it looks like muddy fingers, rice on the floor, wet sleeves and a very proud little face. 🥹

A little messy. A lot of learning. 🌱

MESSY PLANET PAINTING 🪐🎨

A little artist. A few floating planets. And permission to make a beautiful mess. 🌎✨

Hanging white balloon planets or polystyrene balls can turn painting into a whole-body learning experience. As little hands paint, push, spin and reach for the planets, they’re developing:

🪐 Hand-eye coordination
🎨 Fine motor control & brush grip
🚀 Gross motor skills through reaching and moving
👀 Visual tracking as the planets swing
🌎 Cause & effect through movement
🖐️ Sensory exploration
✨ Creativity & independent thinking

And the best part? There’s no “correct” planet to create.

Splashes, fingerprints, mixed colours and messy hands are all part of the process. 🤍
Because sometimes learning looks a lot like play.

Want to recreate this activity at home? 🚀
Comment “PLANETS” below and I’ll send you a FREE mini lesson plan PDF with everything you need, the setup, step-by-step activity and the developmental skills it supports. 🪐🌱

Pom-poms + a kitchen whisk + a few coloured cups = surprisingly serious toddler business.

While they’re pulling, picking, matching and sorting, they’re working on fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, colour recognition, concentration and problem-solving… without having any idea they’re “learning.”

And THAT is my favourite kind of learning.

Save this one for later!

If you need 15 minutes to drink your coffee while it’s still hot… this one’s for you. 😂☕️

*Animal Rescue Wash Station! 🐷🦒🐘

Cover a few toy animals in mud (or cocoa if you’re feeling brave 😂), hand your little one a bowl of soapy water and a sponge, and let them get to work rescuing and washing their new furry friends.

They’ll think they’re just making a huge mess (and having the best time ever), but they’re secretly working on:
- Concentration
- Fine motor skills
- Hand-eye coordination
- Language development
- Sensory play
- Independence

The best part? You don’t need fancy toys or a Pinterest-worthy setup. Just a few animal toys, some water, and a little imagination.
Sometimes the simplest activities are the ones little minds remember the most.

Save this for the next time you hear, “I’m boooored!” 😉 by @cognitive_garden

Sunday Challenge #1: Ocean Sensory Bag 💙

Who said learning needs expensive toys?
This week’s Cognitive Garden Sunday Challenge is a simple sensory activity you can make in just a few minutes using things you probably already have at home.

All you need:
💧 Water
🫙 A ziplock bag
🍋 Lemon slices
🌿 Mint leaves
💙 Blue food colouring (or butterfly pea tea for a natural blue)
Seal it tightly, tape it to the floor, and let your little explorer squish, press, crawl, and discover.

This activity supports:
- Sensory exploration
- Tactile awareness
- Visual development
- Hand-eye coordination
- Fine & gross motor skills
- Curiosity and early problem-solving
- Language development through simple conversations during play

Sometimes the simplest activities have the biggest impact.
As your baby explores, they’re strengthening muscles for future milestones, building new neural connections, and discovering how the world works—all through play.

Because at Cognitive Garden, we believe learning doesn’t begin at school…
It begins on the floor.

✨ We’d love to see your little explorer in action! Tag @cognitive_garden or send us a photo of your Sunday Challenge.

Baby's first painting experience... and yes, it was completely taste-safe!

She was only a few months old when I introduced her to painting for the very first time. At this age, babies explore the world with all of their senses—including their mouths—so I wanted to create something that was both fun and safe.

I simply mixed plain Greek yoghurt with a small amount of food-grade food colouring to make edible paint. No complicated ingredients, no hours of preparation... just a simple activity that any busy parent or nanny could put together in a few minutes.

And she absolutely loved it.

To us, it might look like a messy afternoon...

But to a baby's brain, it's so much more.
- Exploring new textures
- Building brain connections
- Strengthening little hands
- Developing hand-eye coordination
- Encouraging curiosity and confidence

This is exactly what Cognitive Garden is all about.

Helping parents and caregivers create meaningful moments that don't require expensive toys or endless preparation—just simple, intentional play that supports healthy development.

Because the best learning often begins with the simplest experiences.

⏱️ Prep time: 2 minutes
👶 Age: 6+ months (when developmentally ready and always supervised)
🧠 Skills: Sensory play • Fine motor • Hand-eye coordination • Curiosity

**A little note:** If you prefer not to use food colouring, you can easily create natural colours instead. Try blending spinach for green, strawberries for pink, blueberries for purple, beetroot for red, or a pinch of turmeric for yellow. The colours may be softer, but they're just as fun for little hands to explore! by @cognitive_garden

🌱 Why I Started Cognitive Garden

About a year ago, I had this idea in my head that I just couldn’t stop thinking about. After teaching for 13 years in four different countries, I realised something…It isn’t that parents don’t love their children.
It isn’t that nannies don’t care.

Life is just busy.

Parents are tired after work. Nannies aren’t always given the knowledge or tools they need. Sometimes everyone is just trying to make it through the day, and before you know it, the tablet comes out because it’s the easiest option. And honestly… I get it.

But every time a child plays, explores, asks questions, listens to a story, builds a tower, paints a picture or even helps you cook dinner, their brain is growing.
That’s what inspired Cognitive Garden.
I wanted to create something that takes the pressure off parents and nannies.

Something that says,
“Don’t worry… I’ve planned it for you.”
Whether all you have is a wooden spoon, toilet rolls, a cardboard box or toys already lying around your house, I’ll show you how to turn them into activities that actually have a purpose.
Not just to keep your child busy…
But to help them reach their milestones, build confidence, develop language, problem-solve, become creative and simply enjoy learning.

Everything I create comes from my experience of teaching children from different cultures, different backgrounds and different parts of the world. I’ve seen that children don’t need expensive toys.
They need someone who’s present.

My hope is that Cognitive Garden helps families spend a little less time looking at screens and a little more time looking at each other.
If I can help even one parent or nanny feel more confident and help one child fall in love with learning, then this dream is already worth it.

Welcome to Cognitive Garden. 🌿🤍
