Have you heard?

The Mayor’s Campaign Against Domestic Violence Toiletry Drive is underway, and we’re asking Columbia to come together to support our neighbors served by @sistercaresc.

Through October 31, we’re collecting essential personal care items including deodorant, body wash, feminine hygiene products, diapers, facial wipes, and more. These everyday items can make a meaningful difference for individuals and families seeking shelter and support.

There are drop-off locations throughout our community, making it easy to give. Every donation, no matter the size, helps provide comfort, dignity, and support when it is needed most.

This is an important effort, and there’s more to come. Be on the lookout for additional information about the campaign and more ways you can get involved.

Together, we can make a difference right here in Columbia.

Last week, the City of Columbia recognized October 9, 2026, as Latino-Hispanic Business Day through a proclamation read and presented by Councilman @samjohnsonforcolumbia alongside @colamayor.

The proclamation coincided with the 8th Annual SC Latino/Hispanic Business Day, led by the @motabusinessacademy and its Founder and President, Vanessa Mota. The statewide celebration honors the contributions, achievements and leadership of Latino and Hispanic business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, educators and community leaders across South Carolina.

The City of Columbia recognizes the important role Latino and Hispanic leaders and business owners play in strengthening our local economy and community.

South Carolina has a chance to lead the nation by building the next generation of nuclear workers with Columbia at the center.

Last week, at the South Carolina Nuclear Summit, we talked about what it will take to turn our existing talent into a long-term economic advantage: investing in workforce development, housing, infrastructure, education and quality of life.

Columbia has the talent and the foundation. Now it’s time to build around it and continue attracting the companies, jobs and innovation that will shape South Carolina’s nuclear future.

Last night’s City Council meeting included several special presentations!

@colamayor presented proclamations recognizing Customer Service Week, Fire Prevention Month and National Community Planning Month.

Customer Service Week recognized the @columbiascwater Customer Service team and the important role they play in connecting residents with services, addressing questions and challenges, and creating positive experiences with City government.

Fire Prevention Month recognized @columbiafire and its continued work to protect our community through fire prevention, education and outreach. In 2025, CRFD’s Fire Prevention Division completed 7,836 fire inspections, while its Fire Education Office reached approximately 36,000 people and installed 403 free alarms for residents in need.

National Community Planning Month highlighted the City’s Planning and Development team and the important role planning plays in shaping how our community grows, develops and interacts with the City.

The meeting also recognized @finlayparkcola's National Recreation and Park Association Innovation in Park Design Award. Last week, @colascparksrec traveled to Philadelphia for the National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference, where they accepted the award.

The evening also included a special moment for longtime community advocate and retired City employee Mama G, who presented Mayor Rickenmann with an honorary black belt recognizing his commitment to eliminating violence in our community.

Meet Dolly Pawton!

After spending too long at the shelter and facing a difficult road ahead, Dolly got her second chance in foster care.

At 5 years old, Dolly is playful, affectionate, confident and full of personality. She loves walks, toys, treats, and belly rubs. She’s also good on leash, knows sit and stay, and is friendly with new people.

Dolly enjoys a good play session with the right canine companion and is still working on her house and crate training. She’s come a long way, and with a little patience, she’ll be ready to shine in her forever home.

Let’s work more than 9 to 5 to find Dolly her perfect match!
