for the first few months of 2026, I had a rich material study with clay. the medium taught me so much, making me a better digital sculptor and honing my work with my hands. the following pieces are thrown vessels adorned with earth-like elements. this richness of material study was not at all possible without studying under @jothamhungstudio. thank you for showing me the way of clay! by @colewslater

A pocket of light that functions like a bud vase. This is an ongoing exploration of how plant matter can be used as a vehicle for light and design. I’ve been deep in research on the dutch painting tradition, Vanitas, where scenes illustrate the full arc of flowers in bloom, slowly wilting, and entering decay. This led me to the work of James Lovelock and the Gaia hypothesis. Initially scrutinized by the scientific community for being too philosophical, his research reframes death as redistribution. Within a self-regulating system, nothing is lost, only transformed. That idea applied to a flower: the wilt becomes a redistribution of form. I’m excited to explore what remains, the translucency, the skeleton, and to celebrate increased light transmission as beauty rather than rot. by @colewslater
