NOW STREAMING. FREE. The complete audio production of “Aughts,” a new radio play written & directed by Jake Lebowitz.

Pay-what-you-can and experience the Script Visualizer at our link in bio. A layered video and audio experience, read the full-length script in real-time with accompanying visuals and footage from the recording studio.

Recorded live in New York City, “Aughts” hovers over two forsaken 27-year-olds reuniting the night of a family wedding. Sharp, witty, and unsentimental, their larger-than-life orphaned dreams become the centerpiece of a passionate exorcism about lives not lived when staring down the barrel of the one you do.

Aughts was independently produced and published online for free.

What became of the cul-de-sac queens? The new play “Aughts” streams July 16:

At the edge of 27, sidelined Joseph McGuire has quietly watched his dreams pass by, until his estranged childhood friend, Ruby Valentine, crash-lands back home. A global superstar who surged to fame as a teenager, Ruby now risks losing everything following a viral drug-fueled incident. Reuniting at her sister’s wedding, Joseph and Ruby are each convinced the other got the better deal... but neither can prove it was worth it, or what to do next. “Aughts” is a dark comedy about falling from grace and stitching together the parachute on the way down.

A new play adapted for audio, the “Aughts” script visualizer streams free on YouTube & wherever you get podcasts July 16. From the live New York City recording, written, directed & edited by Jake Lebowitz.

What is “Aughts” as a project? As a story?

“Aughts” is a play I wrote and had put in the drawer, but revisited when I had the idea to record it as a “radio play.” The end product is a script visualizer blurs the lines of what we consider a “theatrical” experience. It’s a true, capital-P “Play” in the sense it’s two (primarily) two people in a room having a fiery conversation in real-time. The storytelling is enhanced with score, sound effects, and plotting that elevates the conversation to a full world. This includes my favorite elements of live theater, in manipulating time and space before an audience. I have worked tirelessly to keep those moments, down to a dialogue-less prologue, intact as it would be on the stage, but tuned through sound.

As a story, it’s two childhood friends reckoning with their 27th birthdays. Those friends (one a disgraced popstar impossibly trying to reclaim her career; the other a withdrawn college dropout who sees no way out) refuse to believe they’re the ones who had a better a life. As they battle to concede their own failings, they reckon with lives not lived, staring down the barrel of the ones they have.

The script visualizer and audio streams on YouTube this Thursday. AughtsThePlay.com to subscribe and pay-what-you-can.
