This summer I tried a scary thing.

Stand-up class with the talented @dancrohncomedian .

It was a whole different side of storytelling than what I’m comfy with. But I learned so much, and I’m so grateful for the safe space both Dan & my classmates provided.

Ya girl survived her first set in front of an audience last night🙋‍♀️. And the rest of my classmates absolutely crushed it. by @collmefearless

After helping mandate drink covers in California (Law AB 2375), I realized we have the power to create real change. Our platform and product at NightCap, has helped millions of patrons protect themselves, understand they aren’t alone and find their voice to talk about their experiences with drink spiking.

I remember the first time I spoke with a bar owner about NightCap thinking they would become our biggest customer. I was completely wrong.

After more conversations with people in the hospitality industry, I noticed a common theme. Most of them know drink spiking exists but they don’t want to talk about it.

When @chasingredflagsofficial Co-Founder, Ella was drugged, she was refused a toxicology test at the hospital because she hadn’t been s*xually assaulted. Her story exposed how badly our system has failed us. And she’s not alone.

We have heard from every gender and every age, a middle-aged woman fired after her co-worker spiked her drink, parents losing a child, countless survivors left without answers, while new systems remain slow to take effect.

Today, our short documentary, When Is it Enough? Exposing the Realities of Drink Spiking and Systemic Neglect is here. It features the voices of four Boston women, Ella, Lexi, and Colleen, three survivors whose nights out turned into life-altering trauma and a mother, Shawnee Baker, whose daughter tragically passed away after being drugged.

@shawneelynnbaker Baker started @baylieswishfoundation, created in memory of her daughter. Their mission is to make sure no family has to experience what they did by fighting for prevention, awareness, and accountability at every level. Baylie’s Wish is working to ensure drink spiking is recognized as the epidemic it is and that victims’ voices are validated, not dismissed.

Our next step is advocating for Senate Bill S. 1537 in Boston, which would require toxicology tests available to all victims, not only when an assault has occurred. This is essential for validating survivors’ experiences and gathering the data we need to fight this epidemic.

Last week I had to get a lil box on my arm. A box id been fighting against getting for awhile.

It’s called the @omnipod , a wireless insulin pump that has now replaced what my pancreas can no longer do… keep my blood sugar at safe levels.

For the longest time my diabetes progression from needing mild insulin support to becoming fully dependent on outside insulin 24/7 has felt like a defeat.

This pump felt like the final white flag. An uncomfortable externalization of my health struggles. A symbol of my shame for being different. I didn’t want to wave it.

And yet here we are. Wearing it. And life hasn’t collapsed in the way I thought it would. In fact, it’s building my strength and courage in ways I never thought.

And my blood sugars now? Never been better.

Sometimes leaning into our story & our cards isn’t defeat, it’s freedom.

And I’m so lucky to still be alive. Differences & all.

I’ve had a really rocky life for most of it. Once I turned 29, however, my life & I both started to bloom. The light I had to create out of nothing for so long, became real. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I grew up in a home I didn’t feel safe in, with a terminal disease. The two combined made me shrink & drown rather than thrive. When i was 17, I attempted to take my own life. Between my bully & terrorizer at home 24/7 behind closed doors & the depressing statistics of my disease. I just wanted to stop the suffering. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Thankfully that wasn’t my end because I wouldn’t have gotten my new beginning years later. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This past weekend I turned 32. I’m surrounded now by chosen family & community (pictured & not pictured) who bring more joy & purpose to my life than they could ever know. I’m healthy enough to live a normal life & make plans for my future. I’m one of the few who received a miracle in their lifetime. I count my blessings endlessly. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Times are hard right now - for everyone. The odds for good news & change don’t feel in our favor. But I also, through my own life, hold the proof that scary, insurmountable-seeming odds can change. Light can come back in. Miracles can happen. Outcomes can shift. ⁣⁣
