Interdisciplinary learning is a central pillar of the University Honors Program, one that Sophi Rivera embodies.

Sophi Rivera is an Honors senior at CSU. She was selected for the highly competitive Office for Undergraduate Research and Artistry Lab which placed her in a paid 10-week summer internship at CSU Spur.

Although her majors are equine science and psychology, Sophi was able to use interdisciplinary problem-solving to repair an industrial graywater system. Sophi emphasized how much she grew during her time in the lab, all while leaving a lasting impact on Spur.

Congratulations to Evie Munz for being named @csuathletics Student-Athlete of the Week! Evie is a valued member of the @csuswimdive team. At the Front Range Invitational, she placed second in the 100 & 200 fly and helped bring home a win for the 400 medley relay.

Evie explains “being a student-athlete means giving your all in everything you do. We represent our team, our school, and our community, and we are expected to maintain an exemplary character and work ethic.”

Not only is Evie an outstanding D1 athlete, but she is also an Honors sophomore majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. “Balancing multiple commitments and being well-rounded builds great time management skills, develops resilience, and makes for better communicators and team players,” Evie shares. “The skills developed through collegiate athletics and academics last a lifetime, and I am very grateful for the opportunity.” by @colostatehonors

Take your Honors 392/492 or English 382D credit in Paris! 🇫🇷🥐

Next summer, CSU faculty will take students to the heart of Paris for a deep dive into the history, complexities, and joys of the City of Light.

Students listen to tour guide Kévi Donat give a tour about “Black Paris”. Here, they are visiting Luxembourg Gardens statue commemorating the abolition of slavery in France.

This tour is accompanied by additional walking tours of 1961 Algerian massacre, WW2 Nazi occupation, street art, and Père Lachaise Cemetery.

Explore the Carnavalet museum, the oldest City of Paris museum. 618,000 items dating from prehistory to the present come together to tell the unique story of Paris.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Musée l’Histoire de l’Immigration, and Val-de-Marne Contemporary Art Museum.

Partake in a cultural exchange with students from Télécom Paris (a university in the area). French students from an English class about “Franco-American Friendship” organized and ran a walking tour of sites throughout the city.

Participants will also have the opportunity to see the Eiffel Tower, Arab Word Institute, Petit Trianon & Marie Antoinette’s Castle, the Invalides, Centre Pompidou, and the Catacombs.

For Zoey Montoya, researching Colorado’s forests does not stop at what the eye can see 🌲🔬

Zoey, an Honors sophomore studying biology, is a member of the Tiny Titans research team. Alongside team members Cedar and Artemis, she studied how Cameron Peak and High Park wildfires impacted microorganisms like nematodes, ciliates, rotifers and tardigrades. These “little critters” are central to forest health and reveal increasingly important insights into ecological resilience.

While contributing to meaningful research about Colorado’s forests, Zoey was also gaining invaluable research skills. The experience she gained in Tiny Titans served as a springboard for her current research project studying native bees in northern Colorado.

Engage in an experiential learning opportunity that allows you to pursue specialized interests while gaining real-world, mentored experience. Topics range anywhere from creative writing groups to health simulations. No matter what your professional goals and interests are, there is a class for you!

Alumni highlight! 🐏

Our names are Paris and Sophie Kiehl, and we are second year PhD students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are proud alumni of CSU’s Honors program where we studied Biomedical Science with a concentration in Microbiology and Infectious Disease. The Honors program prepared us for the rigor of a PhD program by helping us develop our interdisciplinary mindsets and our oral and written communication skills.

Paris is now studying in the lab of Dr. Owen Fenton, where she is developing novel platforms for targeted delivery of RNA therapeutics. Sophie is in the lab of Dr. Todd Cohen where she studies environmental causes of neurodegenerative disease.

That's a wrap on Honors Welcome Week!

We couldn't have had more fun meeting the newest Honors class and reconnecting with returning students. Thank you to every person who attended one of our events, you brought so much joy and enthusiasm to the start of the new school year.

As the first week of classes came to a close, a few students asked, "what's next?" Welcome Week was only the beginning. Throughout the year, Honors will host social, academic, pre-professional, outdoor, athletic, and creative arts programming to enrich your college experience.
