We couldn't have picked a more beautiful and peaceful place 💕
This song is so precious to me because it was being played so much as Katie was dying. As I held her I knew she was fading away from me, my only grace was knowing she was getting closer to God, and his garden that was bursting into life as she made her enterence into heaven. 💛 taken in Kilmashogue Mountain by @coloursofkate

It is with great pleasure that the South Dublin Art Collective presents "Chance" by Rachel McDermott as this week's Member's Showcase.

"This painting wins hands down as one of my favourites. It was my very first one. It was so unexpected and emerged from a place I didnt know exsisted. I was so compleatly lost at that stage of my life, having lost my only child a few years previously, it was the oasis in the darkness I desperatley needed, Deciding to pick up a paintbrush that day instead of a drink would change the course of my life forever. It gave me hope that something good could come of all this. It gave me the courage to look for help in the form of the out patients program in The Rutland to stop drinking. That was 13 years ago. I havent had a drink since. I continue to paint because its a way to keep close to Katie, as it was her that left me this gift. I know she wants me to continue to show others through my art that there is hope after childloss and addiction".

Introducing our amazing member Rachel McDermott...

Rachel McDermott is an Irish contemporary artist whose vibrant, emotive work serves as a testement to the transformative power of creativity.

Following the death of her only child, Kate, when she was just coming up to her 3rd birthday, Rachel found solace in alcohol to numb the crushing pain of childloss, untill one day she realised that Katie would not recognise the mother she had become.

With no formal training, it was then she decided to put down the drink, pick up a paintbrush and the light began to come seeping back into her life. Rachel found that channeling that grief into an artistic practice, was a much needed sanctuary for her healing.

Coupled with that renewed hope for life and a self care jouney to take part in an out-patient program in @therutlandcenter, Rachel began to slowly heal and find a way to navigate the ongoing trauma of childloss through art and recovery. She began to celebrate her daughter's life, rather than mourne her loss.

Rachel quickly developed a distinctive style featuring rich textures and a celebratory use of color to transform grief into resilience and gratitude.

She mostly paints in oils and draws from endless childhood summer days spent in the dublin mountains surrounded in nature.

Drawn back to painting birds again and again, these symbolise the spiritual and creative freedom she experienced from alcohol addiction once she put down the drink, and the spiritual symbol of her daughter's freedom from pain, and the endless months spent isolated behind the bars of countless hospital cots due to an autoimmune illness that would eventually take her.

Rachel is living in Knocklyon, at the foot of the Dublin mountains and is happily married to her childhood sweetheart Mal, who joined Rachel in their journey of recovery back in 2012.
