“There’s a real emphasis on wanting there to be a connection between the known and unknown. Reaching out and noticing these signs feels like a way to really ground yourself and feel like you can move through things with a bit more sense and understanding.”

Opening tomorrow night, Friday 9 October, from 6pm, is Australian artist Renée Estée’s third solo presentation with COMA, titled ‘One for Sorrow, Two for Joy’.

“I’ve long been interested in the ways we navigate life through signs and superstition. I find myself looking for them everywhere; in birds and animals, chance encounters, or small coincidences that suddenly seem to carry a little more meaning. A butterfly flying into the studio can feel like a good omen, or seeing a particular bird can change the feeling of a day. I noticed when making these works I do something similar when I paint, where chance and intuition are always becoming entangled during the painting process.”

37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, Sydney.

Recently featured in a group presentation at COMA, KV Duong is currently included in Never The Same River at the Ford Foundation Gallery, New York.

Curated by Dexter Wimberly, the exhibition brings together six artists exploring bodily autonomy, migration and the shifting nature of identity. Duong presents Family Portrait (2026), a five-panel work in ink and acrylic on latex that draws upon family imagery to consider histories of migration, memory and belonging.

Never The Same River is on view at the Ford Foundation Gallery, New York, through 5 December 2026.

Last chance to see Justin Williams solo exhibition, Pentimento, at COMA. On view through 3 October, at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, 2204.

Marking the artist’s fifth solo presentation with the gallery, the exhibition takes its title from the art historical term ‘pentimento’, which describes the trace of an earlier image or brushstroke that remains visible beneath the surface of a painting. For Williams, the term reflects both the way he works and the way he thinks about identity. Nothing is ever entirely erased. Each mark, decision and experience leaves something behind.

COMA is excited to present a solo exhibition by Australian artist Renée Estée (b. 1992), titled One for Sorrow, Two for Joy, opening Friday 9 October, from 6pm - 8pm at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, Sydney, 2204.

Borrowing its title from the traditional magpie counting rhyme, One for Sorrow, Two for Joy presents a new body of paintings by Renée Estée that considers the enduring human impulse to transform chance into meaning. Drawing upon folklore, ritual and inherited superstition, the exhibition explores the stories we construct to navigate uncertainty, asking how coincidence becomes narrative and how ordinary encounters come to feel charged with significance.

Justin Williams fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, titled ‘Pentimento’ continues at COMA through 3 October, 2026.

Across paintings and ceramics, Williams draws on history, family and personal mythology, using his own body as a reference point and exploring the vessel as both object and metaphor. Together, the works reveal identity as an accumulation of experiences and selves, each leaving a trace beneath the surface.

On view at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, 2204.

Continuing in the gallery this week is Justin Williams solo exhibition ‘Pentimento’, on view through 3 October, 2026, at 37 Chapel Street, Marrickville, 2204.

Drawing on the idea of pentimento, where earlier marks remain visible beneath the surface of a painting, the exhibition explores identity as something continually formed and reformed over time. Moving between painting and ceramics, Williams brings together references to history, family and personal mythology, often using his own body as a point of departure. The vessel emerges throughout as both a physical object and a metaphor, reflecting how past experiences and former selves remain present, even as they shift and transform.
