On Now – Renée Estée at COMA Renée Estée’s One for Sorrow, Two for Joy explores the space between superstition, symbolism and the search for meaning in the everyday. A new exhibition inviting us to look a little closer, trust our intuition and consider the signs we find along the way. Renée Estée was the winner of the 2026 MA Art Prize by @mafinancial__, an acquisitive prize awarded to one early-career artist showing at Sydney Contemporary. Accolades aside, which often do impress me 🤷‍♀️, this work by Justin Lee Williams titled “I had dreams about you David after you left” takes up real estate in my mind because of its size - nearly 6.5 feet tall - and also because being near water has a way of delighting the spirit and calming the mind. This work by Williams has a magic palette of brick, indigo, ochre, jade, slate, rust, lilac, bone, terracotta. Wow. Renée Estée’s ‘One for Sorrow, Two for Joy’ is on at COMA Gallery, Gadigal Country/Sydney until 14 November 2026. Drawing its title from the traditional magpie counting rhyme, Estée’s new paintings explore the human impulse to find meaning in chance encounters, coincidence and the everyday signs that seem to point towards something greater. Drawing on folklore, ritual and inherited superstition, the works consider how we transform uncertainty into stories, searching for patterns that might help us make sense of the world around us. For Estée, these signs can appear in the smallest of moments, from a butterfly entering the studio to the sight of a particular bird. This search for meaning extends into her painting process, where intuition and chance become entangled in the act of making. Across the works, the ordinary takes on an unexpected significance, revealing how belief, imagination and the stories we inherit shape our experience of the unknown. Shelf Life is a new public sculpture developed in collaboration with the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the National Seed Bank, commissioned by the @canberraartbiennial and on view until October 31! This work has emerged from participation in a seed deposit at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in October 2025. It investigates seed preservation as a strategy for climate resilience, asking what it means to safeguard a life at the scale of a seed. The sculpture is composed of two planted bronze seed forms, developed in dialogue with botanists and seed scientists, resting upon an aluminium shelf-like base. Suspended between dormancy and growth, archive and organism, Shelf Life positions seeds as living technology for navigating uncertainty, embodying collective care for futures yet to emerge. Documentation by Kiernan May, and seed X-rays and scans courtesy of the National Seed Bank as a part of the works development.
