Goalies! Do you struggle with dipping your hands or dipping in your stance? The answer might be more mental than it is physical. The next time you’re in practice or getting extra reps, tell yourself that your job is to make the shooter beat you low like coach Cash is saying. Be ok with it. Deliberately shifting that mentality will allow you to focus more on your hands and your body. It’ll allow you to keep yourself from dipping. Building that muscle memory in practice will then translate to games. 2 for 1! Two great points here by Coach Cash! 1: Push your own tempo! When you’re in a training environment, get set fast. The faster you move to get set the better. Quick movement will help reinforce good habits in positioning and ready stance set up. 2. Open up when you’re on the post. So often we see goalies with their toes pointed at the feeder that is standing on goal line extended. Open up and face upfield more. By being open (also can be read as “flatter”) you cover more as a ball carrier climbs the hash for a better angle. You are also subtracting more pre-shot movement and footwork on a feed to the middle third of the field or a skip pass to the opposite side. One of the things that makes TGW different is the collective experience our coaches bring to the table coupled with their willingness to allow goalies to do what makes them feel physically comfortable. Coach Cash’s point here is a classic traditional goalie coaching point: “Eye, Thumb, Ball”. Keep your thumb in line with your eye to keep your hands and stick in a place that can keep your movement efficient. But it’s important to remember that there are a ton of ways to be efficient playing goalie. Some goalies play better with their top hand in line with the shoulder, some above their forehead. Eye thumb ball doesn’t work for everyone but it’s a great teaching point for a goalie that might be having some issues with hand placement and being efficient getting to the ball. #goalie #goaliesaves #goalies #lacrosse #lacrossegoalie #lacrossegoalietraining #lacrossegoaliedrills #réel #reels #explore #explorepage #explorepage✨ #lax #laxgoalie by @comcashcable
Bottom hand in your ready stance is arguably more important to your success than your top hand is. If your bottom hand is too close to your body, you will get stuck going to your off side. If it’s too far away it will cause the angle of the stick to be off at the point of contact with the ball. Keep your hands “Flat” like coach Cash says, or one on top of the other so that your hands are balanced and working together.
