I just realised I haven’t talked about headshot photography in a while, so here’s the lovely Laurel Devenie.

This portrait was featured in the 2026 Playmarket Annual, which was already pretty special to see. Then I got to photograph Laurel and Jesse from the OneOneSix team at the Northland Business Excellence Awards, where they won the EMA Excellence in Business, Small Business Award.

I was so happy to see the win announced, and really proud to be there to capture it. So this was meant to be a headshot post, but turned into a little celebration too. Congratulations, Laurel and the OneOneSix team! 🎉 by @commercial_bynimmy

How often does the whole team actually end up in the same photo?

Team photos can easily become one of those things a business keeps meaning to update, especially as people come and go. But there’s something valuable about having a proper photograph of the people who keep everything running. It puts real faces to the business and helps clients feel like they already know who they’ll be meeting.

For the Smart Active Solutions crew, photographing them outside their own gym made far more sense than putting them against a plain wall. The setting, uniforms and equipment give the photo context, while still keeping it clean and professional. It feels like their team, in their space.

A strong team photo can be used across your website, social media, proposals, recruitment, media features and plenty more. But beyond that, it captures the people behind the business as it is right now, and that’s worth updating every once in a while.

If your current team photo is a few staff members behind, flick me a message and we can plan something that actually suits your team and what you do.

A little BTS from another headshot session, and proof that there’s usually a lot more chatting and laughing happening between photography than serious posing 😂 Always a good time catching up with one of my regular clients and creating some fresh photos for them. taken in Whangarei, Northland by @commercial_bynimmy

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to photograph Atamira Dance Company’s audience-response performance of Rongo Whakapā at ONEONESIX. The audience were invited to experience the performance in their own way and respond as it unfolded, which made it such an interesting evening to document.

ONEONESIX has a pretty meaningful place in my own story. A lot of my early photography career was spent there photographing shows, learning how to work with stage lighting and figuring out how to anticipate moments before they disappeared. I still return for a few shoots there most years, and while the space is familiar, what happens inside it is always completely different.

Photographing Atamira there almost felt a little full-circle. It reminded me how much of my journey began there and how far my work has come since.

Thank you @atamiradancecompany for inviting me to photograph such a powerful piece of work, and to the incredible performers who gave me so much to capture. It’s always great to be back at @oneonesixwhangarei 💜 Atamira Dance Company performers during Rongo Whakapā at ONEONESIX in Whangārei, dramatically silhouetted against vivid orange and red stage lighting. Your photo is often part of someone’s first introduction to your business. I love a portrait that makes that introduction feel friendly, where you can imagine meeting the person and having a conversation.

The setting can help connect that introduction to what you do, too. For Huia, we photographed her in surroundings that reflected her work in real estate. When you’re helping people buy or sell a home, so much comes down to trust and knowing the area. Portraits taken in the neighbourhoods you work in can help people place you in that community and feel a little more familiar with you before you’ve even met.

And if you’re looking for a friendly, approachable agent, have a chat with Huia Dunn. She’s awesome! 🌿 Outdoor professional portrait by Photography by Nimmy of a smiling woman in a black suit, standing with one hand in her pocket. There’s something pretty special about working with someone once, then getting invited back again and again.

We’ve now worked with Tatum and YVY Dance on a couple of projects, we’ve already got another one booked in, and we’re talking about what comes after that too. I think that’s one of the best parts of what we do. You get to understand how someone works, what matters to them and what they’re building, and each project gets better because of it.

Tatum, thank you for such a lovely review and for continuing to bring us into the world of YVY Dance. We’ve had so much fun creating with you so far, and I’m very excited for what we’ve got coming up. 🤍 Testimonial graphic for Photography by Nimmy featuring a five-star client review from Tatum Tyslic of YVY Dance. Tatum describes Nimmy as warm, calm, welcoming and professional, and praises Nimmy and Drew for making her team feel comfortable while working together on multiple creative photography and video projects. by @commercial_bynimmy

You don’t need to suddenly become a content creator just because video is good for business. You already know what you do and why it matters. Sometimes you just need someone behind the camera who can help turn that knowledge into content that feels natural.

We’ll help you work out what you want to say, take care of the filming, and make the whole experience feel more like a conversation than a performance. You bring the business. We’ll bring the gear and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

If video has been sitting on your “we really should do that” list for a while, let’s work together and finally make it happen.

I promise it’s not as scary as you think! taken in Whangarei, Northland by @commercial_bynimmy

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what actually makes a business feel trustworthy online, especially now that it’s becoming so easy to make almost anything look polished and established.

A slightly strange experience with a cold call sent me down this rabbit hole. It got me thinking about what we look for when a business approaches us first, how much weight a professional website really carries now, and what happens when AI-generated people, UGC and testimonial-style content start replacing some of the real-world signals we’ve traditionally relied on.

I’m not anti-AI at all, but I do think there’s a difference between using AI as a tool and using it to create the appearance of trust. And as everything gets easier to manufacture, maybe real people, real work, genuine reviews and a history we can actually verify become even more valuable.

I unpacked the whole thought process in the new blog here: https://www.bynimmy.com/blog-guides/when-everything-looks-professional-what-actually-makes-a-business-trustworthy

Or via the link in my bio. Red portrait-format blog graphic for Photography by Nimmy. Large white serif text reads, “When Everything Looks Professional, What Actually Makes a Business Trustworthy?” with the word “Trustworthy” in italic type. Small red text near the top reads “BLOG”.

Your headshot is often doing more work than you realise. It might be the first thing someone sees before they read about what you do, so it needs to feel professional without becoming stiff or overly corporate.

A good headshot should feel polished and approachable while still looking like you. It’s not about turning you into a different person for the camera. It’s about creating an image that represents you well and feels right wherever you use it.

If your current headshot no longer feels like the person showing up to do the work, it might be time for a new one. Headshot sessions are available in Whangārei, across Northland and further.
