We’ve been at the helm since issue 4, and as we approach our 10th edition, it’s a nice moment to be recognised alongside such great company. Welcome to the family, @geelonggallery. We’re glad to be on board. Even more so that our first project together is this one.

To mark its 130th year, and in the centenary year of Monet’s death, Geelong Gallery has just opened its most ambitious exhibition yet: ‘Discovering the Impressionists: Paul Durand-Ruel, art dealer among the artists.’

On now until 11 October, the exhibition unfolds across five gallery spaces with more than 70 paintings, most on loan from private French collections and never before seen in Australia.

At the heart of it all is visionary 19th-century French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who nearly went bankrupt backing Monet, Renoir, Morisot and Pissarro at a time when the art establishment wanted nothing to do with them.

The show includes eight Monet works, the largest concentration currently on display anywhere in the country. It also introduces a second generation of painters Durand-Ruel championed later in life, whose work has never travelled outside Europe, until now.

Curated by Marianne Mathieu (@museemarmottanmonet_) alongside Claire Durand-Ruel (@clairedurandruelsno), great–great-granddaughter of the man himself.

Not to be missed. On now at Geelong Gallery. by @common___state

Introducing @dropshopdrinks: a little neighbourhood bottle shop on Lygon Street, Brunswick East, built on a simple idea.

Small but bold, it’s taken the intuitive layout, tight curation and effortless in-and-out of a Japanese convenience store, and applied it to wine.

Offering a welcome escape from the decision fatigue that often comes with buying booze, Drop Shop stocks a shortlist of certified bangers organised around real occasions (weeknight dinners, weekend parties, impressing your in-laws)—not someone else’s idea of what you should like.

It’s the work of our founder Luke McKinnon and head of special projects @dan_sims, who’ve spent the past year quietly building the concept with store manager Courtney Keegan. We’re biased, but we think Drop Shop is going to change a few minds about what a bottle shop can be.

Grab your popcorn, the 2026 @melbfilmfest program has just dropped.

A comedian turned foodie navigates newfound virality and a secret she’s desperate to keep. Pedro Almodóvar mines his own life for inspiration in a razor-sharp metafiction on art and ego. Climate change pushes polar bears into uneasy contact with a Canadian town. Screening in Competition, a case of mistaken identity with a dying relative unlocks an unexpected homecoming. As always, there’s plenty of cinematic gold worth clearing your calendar for. These are just some of the films topping our list. by @common___state

What a festival. Lil’ Kim commanding Festival Hall, Florentina Holzinger arriving fresh from her Venice Biennale sensation to deliver A Year Without Summer, the historic Flinders Street Station Ballroom reborn as a living dance academy, world-class live music and theatre across the city, plus the launch of the very first Australian Dance Biennale.

We’re thrilled to have been part of it once again. Here’s to another unforgettable Melbourne winter, @rising.melbourne. by @common___state

The Luxury Report returns with Issue 12—an edition defined by those who’ve redrawn the map.

On the cover: one family’s multigenerational journey from a suitcase of vitamins to a global health empire. Elsewhere, explorer @_peterhillary reflects on legacy and his lifelong passion for exploring and protecting our planet, and Paris-based architect and designer @jorispoggioli checks in ahead of his recent Australian debut. @melbwritersfest turns 40, and the 2026 program reminds us why human storytelling matters more than ever.

Already in the diary: 2025 Booker Prize winner David Szalay on his new novel Flesh; Yann Martel back on Australian soil for the first time in a decade; and in a headline double bill at Town Hall, Jacinda Ardern in conversation with Virginia Trioli on leadership in crisis, and R. F. Kuang interviewed by Shelley Parker-Chan. Also on the list: Stephanie Alexander discusses finding joy in the kitchen, plus a timely panel on the rise of independent media featuring Antoinette Lattouf, Amy Remeikis, Antoun Issa and Osman Faruqi. And that’s just the beginning... by @common___state
