Tales from the staff entrance part 3. 👀 Last month a brush with a mission impossible, this week an experience with a twist 🍸, almost certainly shaken not stirred, and with a licence to thrill. It’s national customer service week nationally, but our retail team like to do things a little bit differently… so my mission - should I choose to accept it - was to interview David Zaritsky in Fortnum’s Boardroom. In front of an audience of our people. The twist? It was 24 hours after global James Bond Day on Monday October 5th, also the calendar date that Dr No starring Sean Connery was released in 1962, and Skyfall in 2012. David Z is the founder and curator of @thebondexperience , and host of the biggest Bond themed channel globally on YouTube. Our theme of discussion was the connection between Bond, (Ian) Fleming & Fortnum’s - through the lens of luxury retail, and extraordinary food & drink. 🤔 🧐 Did you know that in From Russia with Love, in Fleming’s original novel, 007 comes into Fortnum’s to buy a jar of Norwegian honey? Or that Fleming had Fortnum’s products flown out to GoldenEye in Jamaica? Fortnum’s pink champagne is gifted to the female narrator in The Spy Who Loved Me… so there was lots to talk about. Not least the tactile nature of luxury, the craftsmanship and the considered nature of the experiences. David grew up watching Bond movies with his father, while holding his beloved Corgi toy cars, and we reflected on the nostalgia in luxury too. We mulled on what Bond would choose for his hamper today, in 2026. The answer, a fabulous selection of considered items from our Foodhall, ground floor, biscuitorium, beauty department and gin distillery. 🥃 Bond as a character is prone to live each day as if it were his last, and escapism is at the heart of the stories. Which may be why they still resonate today. A big thank you to Sean, Kathryn, for the opportunity, and to Blair, Sarah, Louise and Adam on the day. Nobody Does It Better…? (A shameless reference to my favourite Bond theme).
