Those of us at Community Canopy Project are so grateful for your help and support in 2025! Together, we continued our mission of implementing ecological restoration through community land stewardship.

This year, we:
- worked with over 250 volunteers who gave 1400+ hours
- planted 900+ native trees and shrubs in our community
- installed 3 native pollinator gardens, including at the Conshohocken Library
- converted 5.5 acres of mowed turf to a riparian buffer
- supported two native tree giveaways which distributed ~300 trees to local residents

We are already planning for a big 2026 - check out our Upcoming Events page to join us January for some invasive removal events.

If you'd like to support us monetarily in 2026, you can make a tax-deductible donation at https://communitycanopyproject.org/donate/

We are excited to announce a new name and logo for our organization. Colonial Canopy Trees is now the Community Canopy Project!

Colonial Canopy Trees (CCT) was founded by Andrew Conboy (Andrew The Arborist) in the summer of 2020 in an attempt to plant more trees and increase the tree coverage within the Colonial School District area, which is where our original name was derived.

The main reason for our name change was to remove the word "Colonial". Although our group still does most of its work within the Colonial School District (Plymouth Township and Whitemarsh Township), we have slowly widened our reach and impact beyond this area. More frequently, folks who were not familiar with the Colonial School District area were questioning our name and its meaning. Furthermore, colonialism (and imperialism) was, and is, largely an ecologically-damaging force throughout much of the world. It was unintentionally ironic to have “Colonial” as part of our name, when much of our work aims to undo this ecological damage brought forth by colonial practices and world views.

Under our new name, we’re confident that we can continue to broaden our horizons and strive for larger positive impacts on local ecosystems, and, more importantly, on the people who will steward them.

It may take some time to get used to, but we hope you will continue to support our group through this new change!

The Whitemarsh Woods neighborhood is the first place we ever planted as an organization! We're thrilled to see the trees we planted in 2020 are thriving and have outgrown their cages. They are well on their way to becoming long-lived trees that will provide shade and beauty to the community for generations to come.🌳

We returned this past Sunday to plant 10 more native trees in the common areas of the neighborhood. We are grateful for the dedicated volunteers who braved the elements to help out. A huge thank you to all who participated, and special thanks to Whitemarsh Woods residents - Craig L., Debbie H., Lisa K. - for helping to organize and make this planting possible. Your efforts will have a lasting impact on the community! #nativeplants #trees #nativetrees #restoration #whitemarsh by @communitycanopyproject

Fort Hill, a historic area of Fort Washington State Park, lost many mature trees in a 2022 tornado. This past weekend, we did a bit of planting and invasive species removal here to help improve part of the area!

Thanks to all who helped plant two native trees and 3 native shrubs in a mowed area off the main road, and to the volunteers who helped removed burning bush (Euonymus alatus), Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii), and Asiatic bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) from the surrounding woods!

We planted
- 1 white oak (Quercus alba)
- 1 red maple (Acer rubrum)
- 3 blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium)

Thanks to a fun, hardworking crew from CMC Energy Services, we completed some much-needed maintenance at Storehouse Church, one of our riparian buffer restoration sites in Plymouth Township!

We improved damaged fencing and tubes to better protect from deer pressure, removed weeds from around each tree, and added new mulch. We also planted 7 new trees and shrubs to replace ones that didn't make it.

Planting is the easy part, but maintenance is much more important. Thanks to the CMC team, these native trees and shrubs are well on their way!

Our first planting events of the fall season took place this past weekend! Thanks to many awesome volunteers, we planted 64 native trees and shrubs at the Martin Luther School in Whitemarsh Township. These trees and shrubs were planted in bare, mowed areas near their stream to help improve the riparian buffer.

Our next event will be this upcoming Friday September 18, 9:30am – 12pm at Storehouse Church in Plymouth Township, where we'll do some maintenance on our riparian buffer installations there!

Our fall restoration season is underway! Thanks to all who joined us this past weekend to help us remove various invasive plant species from Fort Washington State Park.

We focused on pulling or cutting down Border Privet (Ligustrum obtusifolium), Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii), Dahurian buckthorn (Rhamnus davurica), Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum), and more! We'll return later this fall to plant some native shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers.

Our next event is on Friday, September 11, 9:30am – 12pm at Storehouse Church in Plymouth Meeting, where we'll continue to plant and maintain the riparian buffer along the stream! Visit our website for more info - https://communitycanopyproject.org/upcoming-events

Thanks to all who came out and watched The Extraordinary Caterpillar at our event last week! We teamed up with the Koontz Park Native Gardens & Greenhouse Program and Whitemarsh Township to show this exciting new documentary that dives into the importance of caterpillars in our ecosystems.

After the documentary, we had a brief discussion about native plants, gardening for caterpillars, and about how amazing the photography and videography was.

We hope to have more educational events like this in the future, so stay tuned!

Thanks to Whitemarsh Township for providing a great space for this event and for paying for the screening fee! Thanks to the @williamjeanesmemoriallibrary for providing the projector, and to Maddy and John for the speakers!

Over the past ~2 years, Andrew and Karen have been working with Green Woods Charter School (@greenwoodscharterschool), a K-8 school in Roxborough, to help teach students about trees and native plants!

We installed a native pollinator garden here in 2025, helped students complete an inventory of campus trees, and installed tree and shrub identification labels!

Recently, the school has sought Level I Arboretum accreditation through ArbNet, which requires a labeled collection of at least 25 taxa of trees and other woody plants, among a few other things. Community Canopy Project was recently acknowledged at Green Woods' arboretum kickoff event!

We love working with the eager, smart, and interested students at Green Woods, and are thrilled that the school continues to emphasize the importance of ecological literacy, land stewardship, and environmental sustainability!

Whew - it was a hot one! We are SO VERY grateful to the many amazing volunteers who joined us yesterday at Harriet Wetherill Park in Plymouth for some maintenance of our riparian buffer areas.

Volunteers from @axa, @cisco, and @cencoraglobal did an amazing job of fixing and adjusting tree cages and tubes, mowing and weedwhacking non-native weeds around our installed plants, mulching, and installing new educational signage -- all in the blazing heat! These tasks will help ensure the survival and growth of the plants we installed, and we couldn't have done this without your help!

Thanks to Carol E. from AXA, Shanna S. from Cisco, and Patrick S. from Cencora for mobilizing your awesome teams! CCP VP Karen K., her husband Randy S. and board members Debra H. and Victor L. led teams and supervised the process -- this is not our typical event, and the workflow was somewhat complicated, but everything went smoothly!
