An evening discussing the relations between cybernetics, decoloniality, and material practices continuing the wonderful conversations we have had in our reading and research group.
This is a wonderful collaboration with Políticas da Indigestão(Brasil) and many other partners. The event will be in English and Portuguese.
Do drop by if you are in Dublin or join online!

Happy to join the Conversational Confluences (ASC) event to share a few thoughts on Heinz von Foerster’s ecological project, which emerged from what Asaro describes as a seemingly “esoteric” research agenda on self-organization in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The better-known stories are those of the AI trajectory represented by Marvin Minsky, John McCarthy, and others who broke away from cybernetics; Beer’s self-organizing experiments, which led him to work with the economy in Allende’s Chile; and Hayek’s visions of markets. Yet there is still much to learn from von Foerster’s work, which led him to collaborate with practitioners in developing a different kind of tool—or, in the words of his one time collaborator Ivan Illich, convivial tools: tools that help sustain the autonomy of diverse living worlds and serve politically interrelated individuals rather than corporations.

As computational technologies, AI especially, are fast developing the capability to perform higher order cognitive tasks, concern grows about the potential diminishment of human abilities, not least, imagination. In ‘Second Order and Imagination’ Dulmini Perera and Tony Fry respond to this. They invite reconsideration of the second-order cybernetics of Heinz von Foerster that challenged the assumption of a neutral observer, emphasising ‘the observation of observation’ which posits the acquisition of knowledge as an iterative, circular process in which genuinely new possibilities can emerge. They suggest that this could be extended to exercises of the ‘imagination of imagination’ via the writing of fictions as objects of/for second-order critical reflection.

Happy to share In-tension a spanish/english multimodal platform developed by colleagues in (Diseño Detonante) Colombia and Australia exploring contemporary design issues within and beyond academia

Was nice to do one of the keynotes and learn from a wonderful community of practitioners across the Danube and a host of other experts. Many thanks to Ute, Ivan and Alexander for the organization

Part of my provocation included asking questions about speculative practice and design that resonates with a growing body of work on ecological cybernetic, decolonial theory and anthropology.
As accelerating change produces “improbable” (Ghosh) environmental events and signals we are confronted with the limits of territorial and legal frameworks inherited from colonialism, capitalism, and the modern state. What might happen if we took Gregory Bateson’s call to imagine territorial systems as “territories of minds” seriously? How might such a shift transform our understanding of speculation beyond prediction, market calculation, or future scenarios? And how might an expanded notion of speculation reshape the legal, institutional, and epistemic forms through which ideas of “value” are negotiated within territorial governance.

It was so nice to chat with urban design and planning students in Sri Lanka, albeit virtually, about reading, sketchnoting, and thinking. It feels like these practices are more important than ever, at a time when thinking itself often seems to be under threat. It was especially lovely to hear that my work has inspired an assignment that they do in their undergraduate years. And many thanks to colleagues at UoM for the invitation.
Here we are doing a short exercise and developing a sketch note and discussion around a short quote from “Borderlands” by Gloria Anzaldúa. Borderlands of cause exist everywhere and in Sri Lanka they take on their own peculiar forms.
