Beyond the “Green” Masterplan: Searching for urban cosmologies

At the #AHRA2025 conference at the end of 2025, we took a deep dive into the “Cosmological Turn” in architecture. Representing the #3LProject, we asked: What would an African NbS mean for these urban spaces?

In Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, nature-based solutions are not just technical, they are deeply spiritual and political. In Kenya, the Mugumo tree is a sacred link to ancestors and a symbol of anti-colonial resistance. Even today, top-down infrastructure must bend around its roots. In Tanzania, the Baobab spirit is a living entity that invokes respect, even as the city grows around it.

Our latest Future Scenarios workshops used visual metaphor posters (swipe to see! ➡️) to trigger conversations about spatial justice. We explored everything from the “cosmology of survival” in informal settlements to the symbols found on traditional Kanga fabrics.
Designing for the future means confronting the colonial wounds of the past. It’s time to move from “copy-paste” urbanism to a pluriverse of local truths. ✊🏽

Last weekend, the 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 held a vibrant conference at @livuni.

The session '𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲', led by @complexity.systems.relations and 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗼𝗵, explored evolving architectural lexicons around the concept of the #cosmos. Alongside contributors Thena Tak, Joel Letkemann, Dasha Moschonas, and Bruna Ferreira, we raised stories and worldings, co-futures and collaborative pluralities.

My talk—𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱, 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁, 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝘀: 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗼 ‘𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀’—departed from the foundational role of shelter in architecture and theory (the primitive hut, the philosopher's cabin) and worked towards more gentle, tentative, appending conceptions.

Drawing on #catherineingraham and #paulfeyerabend, I considered our commitment to #patterns —from the linear to the dual, the planar and the 'silly'— to think how these cross over and shape our sense of space and invention.

Dulmini Perera's article "Orders of change: Mary Catherine Bateson on ecological thinking, narrative practices and attending to worlds in transformation" was recently made open access.

Enjoy it at Intellect Discover: https://doi.org/10.1386/tear_00119_1 (link in bio)

The article highlights Mary Catherine Bateson's cybernetic practice of working with narratives in order to cultivate better understandings and responses to change at the level of both societies and individuals. Connecting Mary Catherine Bateson's practice to the ecological ideas of her father, Gregory Bateson, Dulmini Perera recontextualises the concepts of abduction, metaphor, recursion and narrative within the framework of ecology.

I am thrilled to share “Gregory Bateson’s Cosmos” an interactive graphic mapping Bateson’s encounters with various environmental practitioners in the post 1968 period and “Steps towards a theory of action: Notes on Seven Bateson conferences,“ a series of essays developed together with colleagues Jon Goodbun, Simon Sadler, and Ben Sweeting presents arcs of these stories.
Many thanks to everyone who supported our project, the funding bodies DFG and AHRC and The Bateson Ideas Group for letting me share Bateson’s living systems test in digital form.
