Our current moment was forged in the past. We cannot move forward without understanding how the founders’ treatment of Indigenous nations is the root of authoritarianism in the United States and imperialism abroad. That’s why I created the First America podcast. You can dive more deeply into this history, and its contemporary application, with me and Comrades Education in the upcoming course! The course kicks off this Saturday, and you don’t want to miss any of these sessions. Sign up today! “First America, The Course” is a 6-week community conversation about the history this country tried to leave out, and what it means for the fight we’re in right now. Offered by @comrades.education, each session of the course will frame a First America podcast episode with additional study, analysis, discussion and reflective practices designed to help learning community members develop a political framework for action. I’ll be joining live for two sessions, and @comrades.education is hosting additional guest speakers, including: organizers with @honortheearth, @palestinianyouthmovement and @vetsaboutface; writer/historians @davidbfdean and Jayson Maurice Porter @roguechieftan; Diné Grandmothers Rose Toehe and Viki Blackgoat alongside @hilarygiovaleauthor of the Sacred Land Alliance Registration sliding scale. No one turned away for lack of funds. All sessions recorded. Live attendance not required. 🌳Apply now – Ancestral Journey to Poland 2027 📷 Pictured here, a Yiddish feldmestn (cemetery measuring) ritual Do you feel a pull to reconnect with your Ashkenazi Jewish heritage through the lens of collective liberation? Ashkenazi Ancestral Journeys is nourishing a new expression of diasporic Judaism beyond Zionism from the roots by restoring and healing our connection with the Jewish lands, ancestors, culture, history, rituals and traditions of Eastern Europe. Imagine connecting with the place where your ancestors’ bones lie, learning nearly-forgotten Yiddish women’s ancestral connection rituals like feldmestn, and then using these technologies to deepen your relationship with your ancestors and the land. Here, a participant has found the overgrown grave of a great-great grandfather at Warsaw’s Okapowa Cemetery and is performing this ritual, supported by one of our facilitators and the rest of the participants. The string is then used as wick for candles that are lit in honor of the dead. Ashkenazi Ancestral Journeys is seeking web weavers, seed spreaders, spiritual, cultural, and movement leaders, healers, creatives, teachers, writers, guides, activists, and other open-minded, compassionate souls to join this journey. 🌈 Is this you?🌈 You can find all the info about the 9-month program and the application at https://ashkenaziancestraljourneys.org/. The program starts virtually in January; travel is 15 days in July. Apps are due Monday, November 23. Info sessions are coming up – register for them on the website. Sign up for the newsletter if you don’t want to miss program announcements. #ancestralhealing #radicaldiasporism #feldmestn #ashkenazi# collectiveliberation by @comrades.education
Today is apparently Constitution Day and our Department of Education is requesting quite a few things… It urges schools to strengthen civic learning, encourage routine voluntary opportunities to recite the Pledge, create more national pride, and says students should become “architects of the nation’s future.” On face value, there is nothing especially wrong about this request. The problem is the backdrop. Because if we are going to talk about the last 250 years, then we need to talk about ALL of them. We need to talk about the fact that this nation was built on Indigenous land through genocide and dispossession. We need to talk about the human trafficking and enslavement of Black men, women, and children whose stolen labor helped build the wealth of this country. We need to talk about the people who were excluded from “We the People.” The Department says that if we want to thrive for the next 250 years, students must understand, cherish, and claim the history that unites us. Cool. Then let’s understand the history. For real this time. The truth is, a lot of people would love to feel proud of this place. Let’s create the conditions needed for us all to be proud of! And if we want young people to have civic literacy, then let’s be for real about what civic literacy actually requires. More than mythology. Civic literacy requires honesty.
