The full video is now live on our YouTube channel.

These circular skylights are simply drinking glasses turned upside down and embedded into the concrete ceiling—creating dappled light inspired by sunlight filtering through a forest canopy.

A remarkably simple detail with a powerful architectural effect.

At the Sheats–Goldstein Residence, John Lautner’s architecture extends far beyond the building itself.

Even the furniture was conceived as part of the larger architectural idea… responding to the geometry, materials, and experience of the space rather than simply being placed within it.

Another reminder that for Lautner, architecture was never a collection of separate elements. Everything belonged to the whole.

Some architecture belongs to a moment.

John Lautner’s architecture belongs to every era.

Brian Linder and Kris Conner describe the Sheats–Goldstein Residence as being both ancient and futuristic at the same time... a place that feels like a primordial cave while simultaneously resembling a spacecraft from the future.

That rare balance is what makes Lautner’s work timeless. It doesn’t follow trends. It transcends them.

This reel offers a glimpse into that idea.

In our upcoming YouTube interview, we sit down with the architects who have spent decades preserving, restoring, and expanding this extraordinary masterpiece, sharing stories and insights that few people have ever heard.

THE FULL INTERVIEW PREMIERES FRIDAY, 8/14 ON YOUTUBE.

Club James | Conner + Perry Architects, 2024
Adjacent to the Sheats-Goldstein Residence

Rooted in Jim Goldstein’s vision for Club James, this moment demonstrates how Conner + Perry’s intervention enhances and extends that vision.

The vertical circulation is intentionally detached from the concrete platform, transforming what could have been a purely functional stair into a deliberate architectural experience.

The stair, pool, horizon, sky, and clouds align into a single composition.

Rather than simply moving us from one level to another, the architecture asks us to pause and perceive.

These moments are rare.

Architecture is no longer just shelter or structure; it becomes an experience of light, proportion, reflection, and perspective. For a brief moment, we’re not just occupying the space… we’re witnessing it.

Thank you to James Goldstein @jamesfgoldstein , @connerperryarchitects , and the entire team for continuing to push this remarkable work forward.

Full video coming soon.

Designed by John Lautner in 1962, the Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Beverly Crest remains one of Los Angeles’ most recognisable works of modernist architecture. Originally commissioned by the Sheats family and acquired by James Goldstein in 1972, the house has occupied a singular place in architecture and popular culture for decades, appearing everywhere from Helmut Newton photographs to The Big Lebowski.

Much of the estate’s continued functionality and longevity is owed to Kristopher Conner and James Perry of Conner + Perry (@connerperryarchitects), who have overseen works and designed additions to the property since 2015. Their interventions complement Lautner’s original vision while introducing new spaces, including a nightclub, VIP room and library, offices, outdoor terrace, pool and spa.
