Club James, designed by Conner + Perry Architects and James Goldstein in Los Angeles, USA (2024)

On a hillside in Beverly Crest, a private nightclub sits under a tennis court. It belongs to the Sheats-Goldstein Residence, the John Lautner house from the early 1960s, which @jamesfgoldstein bought and spent decades expanding, first with Lautner and later with his protégé Duncan Nicholson. Goldstein had always wanted a club of his own, so work began in the early 2000s on one carved into the slope below the house. The plan grew over the years, and @connerperryarchitects the architects of record since 2015, finished it in 2024.

Inside are a stainless-steel dance floor, concrete seating with silver leather cushions, a ceiling of board-formed concrete, and frameless glass walls that look out at a jungle garden and the city. A concrete stair hangs from a single point, with a triangle cut into its side that echoes shapes in Lautner's original house.

Most clubs are closed boxes with no windows. This one opens to trees, sky, and the lights of Los Angeles, and it keeps Lautner's language of raw concrete and glass but adds a nightlife edge. It is also hard to get into, so most people only know it from photos and a few events, like the Amiri Spring-Summer 2021 runway show shot on the estate.

What are your thoughts? 💭

Built in the early 1980s, John Lautner’s Castle in Los Angeles is defined by its curved stone walls, warm timber ceilings and dramatic views across the surrounding canyon. Conner + Perry Architects carefully restored the house while preserving its original materials, built-in furniture and distinctive geometry.
The result stays remarkably true to Lautner’s original vision, where architecture, interiors and the California landscape were always conceived as one.

An extended cut from our interview with architects James Perry and Kris Conner, sharing decades of knowledge preserving John Lautner’s vision.

The full video is now live on our YouTube channel.

These circular skylights are simply drinking glasses turned upside down and embedded into the concrete ceiling—creating dappled light inspired by sunlight filtering through a forest canopy.

A remarkably simple detail with a powerful architectural effect.

At the Sheats–Goldstein Residence, John Lautner’s architecture extends far beyond the building itself.

Even the furniture was conceived as part of the larger architectural idea… responding to the geometry, materials, and experience of the space rather than simply being placed within it.

Another reminder that for Lautner, architecture was never a collection of separate elements. Everything belonged to the whole.

Tonight we tour Lautner’s Castle — a masterpiece from the early 1980s by American architect John Lautner, sensitively restored and updated for 21st-century living by Los Angeles firm @connerperryarchitects .

What makes this restoration singular is the discipline of its restraint. Every intervention was, as principal Kristopher Conner puts it, “minimal — trying to preserve the architecture as much as possible.” Douglas fir panels stripped and refinished. Copper elements replacing white painted metal on the beam caps, aging more honestly with the house. A custom sofa built from the same glulam Douglas fir as the house beams. A kitchen range hood concealed entirely within the ceiling. And most remarkably, a custom double-bowled vessel sink carved from a single boulder by Stoneland — so rare in size it took a year to procure.

Lautner’s original philosophy — natural materials, compression and expansion of space, a harmonious relationship with the landscape — runs through every decision.

Some architecture belongs to a moment.

John Lautner’s architecture belongs to every era.

Brian Linder and Kris Conner describe the Sheats–Goldstein Residence as being both ancient and futuristic at the same time... a place that feels like a primordial cave while simultaneously resembling a spacecraft from the future.

That rare balance is what makes Lautner’s work timeless. It doesn’t follow trends. It transcends them.

This reel offers a glimpse into that idea.

In our upcoming YouTube interview, we sit down with the architects who have spent decades preserving, restoring, and expanding this extraordinary masterpiece, sharing stories and insights that few people have ever heard.

Designed by John Lautner for Helen and Paul Sheats and completed in 1963, the Sheats-Goldstein Residence is one of the world’s most celebrated examples of organic modernist architecture.

Since acquiring the property in 1972, James Goldstein has carefully preserved and expanded the residence. Working with @connerperryarchitects since 2015, the estate has evolved.
